As a side note actually if you look at the statistics given by a newspaper a few weeks ago (I think Hurriyet I'm not sure) Arabic is rated quite low despite being a neighbor, this said it always customary for people on the border to know how to speak a little of the country they border. But most rural Turks do know a little about Arabic since they attend Quran (religious) courses when they were small and mostly learn the texts by heart. So they're familiar to the language but usually unable to understand it.

-The highest rated language is of course English, even though most Turks do know how to speak they want to develop it since their English is mostly confined to High School English.
-German comes next, because of the huge number of Turks living in Germany, even those who don't have relatives desire to learn the language or get to know it better so it'll be easier for them to communicate with emigrants from Germany. The third generation of Turks in Germany usually have no, or slightly broken Turkish and tend to confine themselves to small groups when they come here. And a lot of Germans do come to Turkey for holidays and knowing a popular language is a quick way to open doors for more job opportunities.
-Italian, after Germany was the highest rated language. There are a lot of Turks in Italy as well, and as far as I can understand Turks are more welcomed in Italy and most Turks would prefer going to Italy for holidays (one of the top spots). 50 years ago French was considered a beautiful language and was widely accepted because of this (although it wasn't a universal language anymore and was slowly being replaced by English), today that language is Italian.
-There's also Spanish but I haven't really figured out why, I just know that I have friend who's a teacher in the language institute in Ankara, Tomer and they had to open a few more extra classes.
-Russian is what most men want to learn, obviously ahaha. You'd actually be surprised at the number of boys who can get quite well in Russian, they seem to pick it out somewhere, hmmm I wonder where... It's not just for women though, it's also a desirable language for business opportunities since a lot of Russian companies are in Turkey and a lot of Turkish companies are in Russia or one of Russia's or satellites such as Kazakhistan. (the same reason goes for Chinese which is increasingly becoming a desired language in Turkey, I've noticed an increase in language courses offering Chinese in Ankara but I've yet to come across someone who actually speaks it).

There you go, if we recapitulate, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Chinese are what Turks are mostly interested in. Far-eastern languages are also in demand these days but usually among the young who wish to explore things, so I didn't put them in my list since they represent a small (but growing) amount compared to the general population. There's a lack of interested in learning neighboring languages as well as our own local languages (I busted my *** off trying to find a Kurdish language course and had to settle for a grammar book). A few words are usually more than enough to communicate with people who live in the borders.

German is the second most spoken foreign language after English.

French (altough is not very popular in Turkey it is considered a very nice lenguage), German use to be popular but not any more, may be Russian, and Chinesse. Depending upon the region you live will be the interest of the lenguage you want a learn. For instance several friend in Istambul are giving Spanish class because they say people there is very interested in Spanish but where i am living i am not able to get any student as Spanish is not in their interest but Russiand and may be Persian is.

I suppose they like German, French and Russian, mostly for business, and Spanish and Italian also because they are beautiful languages.

I guess they are interested also in Greek, Arabic and other languages of neighbour countries, for obvious reasons.

But I think that Tagalog should be mandatory language for them, because Filipino people are so gorgeouz, lol ;))

ps : And I heard that Chinese and Japanese started to be more fashionned now there also (ffor business, I guess)

ps : Tanju, where are you ? Wake up, it's monday morning...;))
