There's a lot to see and do in Amsterdam and it will keep you amused for a week. Bruges in beautiful and fascinating, but you can see most of it in a day. I'd recommend staying in Amsterdam and taking a day trip to Bruges. It's about 3 hours by train - changing at Antwerp. Don't miss the Chapel of the Blood - even if you don't like the religion, the architecture and decoration are amazingly OTT. |

It depends what you want from your holiday. Overall, I prefer Bruges. It's a beautiful old city and the Belgians are better cooks than the Dutch. However, Amsterdam does have the allure of a capital - that function is split between Amsterdam and The Hague.
Amsterdam and Bruges are very close to each other and an easy train journey. Why not visit both? (By the way, Bruges is the French name for the city but it's in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium, so locals call it "Brugge", the Flemish name.) |

Amsterdam for young people there is plenty to see and do they have the Artis Zoo with a sea life centre on with it, Madam Tussuad's and the dungeons museum to name a few +they have shops galore.
Bruge is for older people who who wants to relax, although picturesque there isn't much going on there I'm afraid its very quiet :) |

There is suprisingly a LOT to do in Amsterdam. Madame Toussads Wax Museum, Rijksmusuem, Anne Frank's House, Red Light District. Dam Square is my favorite! People just go there and do shows for money. Its really cool. |

How long are you going for, and what are you looking for?
Amsterdam is a bigger city with more to do.
Bruges is smaller, definitely more picturesque and with far better beer, but if you stay there for more than 2 or 3 days at most you will get very bored. You could make a holiday out of going to Brussels as well though. |

Depends on what you want...a decent movie 'In Bruges' goes over this. Colin Farrell's relatively younger character is not happy that they are there and finds it boring, the older guy in his 50s/60s (his friend) loves the place and the old buildings and history, and scenery. |
