I'm American and a European accent to me is any accent from somewhere in Europe. An Irish accent is a European accent. A German accent is also one.
Is this so difficult for Europeans to get? Because Americans have no trouble when Europeans make reference to an "American accent", despite the existence of many, though not as numerous, varieties throughout the country. |

I think the term was invented by Americans who think that Europe was "invented" as a theme park for them to visit.
Have you spotted how many questions there are on here asking who is the president of Africa...says it all I reckon.

no such thing... except it is the sort of thing a parochial 'little american' might say, and would probably mean something quite glutteral... Northern German or Friesland Dutch for example.
as far as americans are concerned the world is divided into
places we invaded
places with oil we might invade
places with no oil that we probably wont invade |

As others have said, there is technically no such thing, as Europe has loads of very different accents. But I think it is perceived by some people to be anything that is English spoken with a non-British accent. By British I include Ireland as it is part of the British Isles. So basically English being spoken as a second language.
Perhaps it is hard for Americans to differentiate between specific European accent, in the same way I haven't a clue what the difference is between American and Canadian, sorry guys! |

according to americans anyway a european accent is anything that doesn't sound american. Im from ireland too and theres at least 6 differant accents in cork alone let alone all of europe so you cant really say what an eu accent is i have never used the term let alone heard anyone use it. |

I dont think there is such a thing. We have different accents within our own countries, but I dont think you could have one accent from across a continent |

Apparently it is. Ireland is a European country, after all.
I was in the US and opened my mouth, and the locals were there 'Hey, like, you're from Europe!'

I'm American (obviously that will get me some thumbs down). However , when I here someone from Ireland, for example- I say "Oh- I love your Irish Accent. I know what British accent sounds like- because I'm so attracted to it.
I think some of these answers are pretty ignorant. (DOMME ME) Just because the stupidest president in American history is the commander in chief here- does not mean that Americans feel the same way.
Most of us are just victims of this "Take over this country for their oil" mentality. Most of us would like our taxpayer dollars to be spent on education, finding new energy options, feeding the poor and in need right here at home.and remaining friends with as many countries as possible.
And in defense of America - where would your home country be without financial help from our country. We spend more here in the US sending money over seas than any other country in the world. |

There are so many countries within Europe. There is no such thing. |

There are no "European accents" because English is a European language. There's only one huge accent, that's American. |

Correct. You have an irish accent (if you do) and a european accent because Ireland is a part of Europe. Normally people don't say european accent though. I read somewhere that people from England didnt consider themselves european, more like british islanders..but they are still european =) |
