Hi. I'm Portuguese and live in the Estoril coast... yeah, you got it, I'm going to say stay in Lisbon! You have coastal beauty to explore from the river at the Park of Nations, followed by the Alcantara/Belem area, still river but near the mouth, then proceed to the Estrada Marginal (one of the most beautiful roads you can drive, believe me) on to Algés, Oeiras, Carcavelos, Estoril, beautitul Cascais, on to Guincho, the surfers' beach (another beautiful coastal road, Cascais - Guincho), then on to cabo da Roca, the Westernmost spot in continental Europe. On coming back to Lisbon take the road across Sintra, visit its Castle and the Pena Palace and see the sights - breathtaking. Don't miss it.
If you like quieter trips, choose Porto, Figueira, Peniche, Obidos, or in the South Porto Covo, Zambujeira do Mar, Odeceixe, Sagres (location of Henry the Navigator's sailing school), or Lagos, Portimao/Praia da Rocha, Carvoeiro, Armação de Pera, Allbufeira, Vilamoura, Faro, Tavira, Vila Real Santo Antonio by the Spanish border...
Tell ya what, check it out at google earth to have an idea. Enjoy!... |

If you're only staying for 4-5 days I would certainly recomend Lisbon and surroundings (Estoril-Sintra-Cascais-Serra da Arrábida and Óbidos a medieval city) because Lisbon it's an awesome capital by the river Tejo that you can't miss with lots of amazing beaches around. You can't go any further in 4-5 days... it's a friendly advice... |

Definitely Lisboa!
I'd check out Porto as well, if I were you.. go to Faro if you want some sun.
Why not go to Madeira? :(
You should check out Praia de Mira as well. A friend of mine's family is from there... it is a beautiful city with great beaches. |

try Sintra too. From Cascais to Ericeira the coast is beautiful too.
Castles, romance, mistery!!! |

Hi!! You're right Portugal has the best Coast in all of Europe! It has rugged ocean coasts with rocky beaches, and other calm seas and beautiful cliffs. I suggest the Algarve for a first visit, it has great calm and beautiful beaches. But.....xek out my Blog for lot's more info and links on Portugal!! I'm sure it can help!
Have Fun!!!

You are quite right and everything looks so good on photos! Well, because it is all great there, really! Go south, I advise, also to have better weather. From Lisbon downwards to Algarve, all the coast is beautiful! Try to find a good deal with a travel agency! Good luck and happy holidays! |

for me the best is "Figueira da Foz"
but for tourist I would recommend "Nazaré" if you want it a little more country-like but still open to tourism
http://www.pbase.com/diasdosreis/nazare
or "PRAIA DA ROCHA" near "PORTIMAO" for more tourist-like adventure. where people speak english too
And a plus is: there are many other coasts near this one, rent a car, it's easy travelling and finding car parks is very easy, except in july-august where you still find a place to put your car near the coast but will have to walk 500m most, what a shame isn't it ;)

For the ultimate tourism sensation go to
"Albufeira"
Fun night-life for young and old, walk by the marina, very nice coast, too many english tourists at the point that most pubs just talk english and almost every night you can watch soccer games there.

I love all the coast of Portugal, but I would recommend the coast of Alentejo. When you arrive to Lisbon rent a car and drive south there are many small and wonderful cheap places.
A friend of mine loved Porto Covo and Zambujeira do Mar (other people have recommend this last place too)
I recommend this site:

Put simply... Cascais or Estoril
Why go to a place (Algarve) that is absolutely full of tourists & has hardly anything traditional other than "fish n chips"?????
My motto is if you are going to pay so much money to travel, why not get in there & experience the real vibes with the locals.. its so much more rewarding.
On the "Lisboa coast" there is so much to see & do... Setubol, Estoril, Cascais, Rio Tego... hire a car & just go where ever the wind takes you. Try to get hold of the Lonely Planet guide to Portugal or have a look on the Visit Portugal website - you can find so much info.
Portugal is a wonderful country & I love going there :-))))) |

Portugal has a lot of coastal cities. Probably Lisbon would be the first choice for most people, as it is the capital of Portugal. It's a really beautiful city, lots of cultural events going on all year round, great night-life and a number of interesting locations, such as Sintra, Arrabida, Mafra, Ericeira, less than a hour drive away.
If you're looking to spend time at the beach, it's not your best option (prob. the Algarve would be) but it's still near some great beaches. Beautiful sights but cold water.
I've lived in Lisbon for the past 12 years. |
