Well there are many beautiful, but still, my fav is Ohrid. I love that city. Thereās so much to be seen there..
During the day you can go on any of the many beautiful beaches by the shore of the lake, do some shoping, sightseeing in the city or just sit in one of the many cafĆ©s in any of the narrow streets in the Old Town and enjoy. For all the young people, the nightlife is great and vibrant. The cafes work late at night, but thereāre also so many nightclubs where you can carry on from there.
For sightseeing, thereāre enormous many old churches, my favourite ones are Plaoshnik, more than 15 centuries old, St. Jovan Caneo, St. Naum⦠If you climb on the Samuil Fortress, just 5 min from the centre, you get amazing sight on the whole lake.
The Lake is clean, one of the oldest ones in Europe, from 1980 protected by UNESCO as a place of world cultural and natural inheritance. Most of the lakeās plant and animal species are endemic, which also makes Ohrid unique. The most famous among these are two types of Ohrid Trout. You should try them prepared on the traditional way. Mmmmmā¦
Ohrid is also known as the site of the first Slavic university run by St. Clement and St. Naum at the end of the 9th century. Ohrid, also, used to be the centre of the orthodox Christianity in the whole region. Thereās so much history thereā¦
And DO NOT miss a boat trip on the lake, especially at night, believe me one of a kind experience!!
I must not forget to mention the hospitability of the people there.
In the last few years Ohrid is soooo popular among foreign tourists, especially Greeks, Dutchmen, Bulgarians, Serbians etc. So, check it out and have fun!!!
p.s. You can also check: Mavrovo, Skopje, Struga, Krusevo, Bitola, Kratovo etc |

If you plan to visit authentic Macedonia of Greece then the best authentic-Macedonian city is the famous Thessaloniki!
Thessaloniki, (Greek: ĪεĻĻαλονίκη), is Greece's second-largest city and the capital of authentic-Macedonia of Greece!!
The Thessaloniki prefecture has a population of 1,058,000 .
Let me copy some information from a very good article from Wikipedia!
"Thessaloniki is a busy, vibrant city and it is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and cultural center as well as a major transportation hub in southeastern Europe. Its commercial port is of a great importance for Greece and for its southeast European hinterland. The city has two state universities that host the largest student population in Greece. As a cultural centre, it is renowned for its large number of monuments of Byzantine architecture as well as for some main Ottoman, and Jewish structures. The city is famous for its International Trade Fair which takes place every September. Thessaloniki is also renowned for the āThessaloniki International Film Festivalā which is characterized as the most significant cultural event in South Eastern Europe, attracting local and international celebrities of cinema and theatre."
Of course you have to visit Chalkidiki (or Halkidiki). It consists of a large peninsula in the northwestern Aegean Sea, resembling a hand with three "fingers" ā Pallene (now Kassandra), Sithonia, and Agion Oros (the ancient Acte), which contains Mount Athos and its monasteries.
And donāt forget Pella and Aigai the ancient capitals of the authentic (Greek) Macedonians.
Pella was the ancient capital of the Greek kingdom of Macedon or Macedonia and s the birth place of Alexander the Great. (The word Pella is a form of the Doric Greek word Apella, originally meaning a ceremonial location were decisions were made. The city was founded by Archelaus I specifically to become the capital of his kingdom.)
(It will be easy to go to Pella from Thessalonici) There is the archaeological museum of Pella. The exhibition includes topographical and architectural plans, excavation photographs, explanatory texts concerning the exhibits, texts on the history of the city, the physical setting of the area, the history of the excavations etc. Also displayed are models of the private houses and casts of figurines and vases made with the ancient moulds found during the excavations.
All the artifacts are some of the strongest proof that the ancient Macedonians were a Greek tribe! (Well everything found is only...Greek!)
There are a lot of things to see in Pellaās archaeological site!
The private houses! Exceptional is the house with the mosaic floors bearing the representations of Dionysos and the Lion Hunt
The house with the mosaic floors of the Abduction of Helen, the Stag Hunt and Amazonomachy. The nucleus of both houses (covering a total area of 2500-3000 sq.m.) is the central peristyle courtyard. A column of the peristyle has been rebuilt.
The Palace, the Agora.
The Sanctuarie of Thesmophorion the temple of Aphrodite, and the Sanctuary of Darron, the curing god (identified by an inscription).
It will be easy to go to Pella from Thessalonica with a taxi but I canāt tell how much the cost will be! It will be equally easy to take a bus and definitely cheaper!
It is important to visit the archaeological site of Vergina-Aigai too!!
It is more impressive and magical!!
Vergina-Aigai is the first capital (before Pella) and it was the place of the ceremonial burial of the royal family of real Macedonia!
In 1977, M. Andronicos brought to light the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus of Vergina (Megale Toumba). The most remarkable of these was the tomb of Philip II (359-336 B.C.) and its discovery is considered to be one of the most important archaeological events of the century. And of course more proofs were added for the Greek identity of the ancient Macedonian kingdom). Since then, continuing excavations have revealed a series of significant monuments.
The most important places to see at Vergina-Aigai besides the royal Palace and the theater of the city (were Philip the II, the father of Alexander the great, was killed) are the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus. This group includes three Macedonian tombs and one cist-grave. One of them was the tomb of King Philip II and another probably belonged to King Alexander IV(the son of Alexander the great and Roxana). These two graves were found unplundered and are lavishly decorated with splendid wall paintings, made by great and famous Greek artists.
A lot of the above answers refer to Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia!!
Donāt confuse authentic Macedonia of Greece with a modern Balkan republic that uses the same Greek name! They are not related at all! |
