What is the best currency to take to Brazil?

The Brazilian currency is called Real (reais for more than one). I appreciate is a very difficult currency to find over the count on exchange bureaus...
I advise you take a bit of US Dollars or Euros with you (be aware Portuguese don't exist from a long time now !!! They've been replaced by Euros) and then the rest in travellers cheques, the safest way to carry money around.
As soon as you get in the airport, change a bit (something like 50 dollars) for the taxi, food money and then keep changing the travelling cheques bit by bit so you don't raise suspect looks that you could be carrying loads of dosh around.

Most of stores won't take the traveller cheques as cash, but you can always go to a hotel reception or the airport to get them cashed for you.

I wouldn't recommend the ATMs (specially if you are going to Rio and Sao Paulo) for safety reasons - some guys could see you are using an international credit card and target you for a later robbery (sad but true) -and also the fees the bank will charge you.

Another tip, never leave the money laying on the hotel room on your bags. Try to take a bag you can lock on your way out to avoid nasty surprises...
Never ever take a bus or walk around flashing your digital camera, video camera or mobile phone.

You will have to exchange money into Brazilian currency. You can take american dollars (1s are best) some will except that, but not all the time.

Also you need a visa.

travelers cheques are the safest option since they come with fraud insurance. if you lose them you can be refunded. Theres been a big issue internationally with fraudulent travelers cheques though so some venders might not accept them.

What do you mean? You'll have to convert it all over to pesos or whatever their currency is anyways, so what does it matter?

Before you go watch the movie "Turistas" might have second opinion of going hehe... best currency to take? US dollars for sure.

Bring US some dollars and you withdraw Reals with your credit cards.

Forget travelers' checks, and take only a small amount of USD cash for an emergency (or a cab ride at the airport when you get back home). Just take your ATM card and use it there. You'll get the best rate of exchange, and low fees.

I took a little cash but the easiest way to get it there is just to use cash machines, they are everywhere.
