Assuming you're in the UK (as this is the UK site), then there is no longer a choice: a 14-year-old must apply for a full, 5-year passport. The 10-year passport is not available until you are 16, and the British Visitors Passport no longer exists. |

There's only one passport you can get, or so I thought? Go to Walmart/Walgreens/etc and get pass port photos, fill out the form at the Post Office, and send in your $70. |

If you are in the US, the info you need is here:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html
There are some minor requirements for a 14-17 year old applying for a first passport--nothing special, mostly just having the parent sign, that sort of thing. As long as he's over 14 it's pretty straightforward. |

Not sure. I recommend you obtain professional advice on this matter, from your country's Passport Office (or similar) rather than relying on a website such as this. You may well receive spurious or misleading advice which could lead to said 14 year old child being imprisoned as an illegal immigrant. |

The one issued by his country of citizenship. It's the only one you can really get. . . |

One issued by their country. Is there more than one type? |

There's only one type. The U.S. ones take about 4-6 weeks so if you are going soon, you have to get moving on this.
The US just changed their passport laws so that all children under the age of 14 have to have BOTH parents go with them to apply for a passport (or have a legal death certificate if necessary)
Good luck! |

I don't even think you can get your own passport before age l8. And THE passport you get is that of the country of your birth (unless you hold dual citizenship - if, for instance your parents are American but they lived in France for a while and you were born there, then you are a citizen of both countries, and at one point you get to choose which passport you wish to use.) |
