Hi!
I'd definitely advise you to get an interrail ticket - check out www.interrail.net - for some real useful and cool information. You could also look at www.interrailnet.com (although I would recommend the first one - it's better)!
Good luck with it! |

on your own, no package tours. Renting a car is best, if you can't afford it take the train. Stay in small hotels/pensions where the locals stay--avoid the hostels full of other foreign tourists unless the primary purpose of your trip is to spend time with other foreigners. |

You do not cite your age, but most of the answers seem to come from youngsters, so here's my 63 year old answer.
Do your research before you leave home.
Europe is not much fun in August, that's when the locals take their vacations. If you can, travel in the Spring or Fall.
What is your level of traveling experiences? Are you a self sufficient type? For your first visit travel with a group or a friend, not a sibling or cousin (you do not want your love life or embarrassing moments to become Family History.)You might look into group or Church travel. Many monasteries and some convents have cheap accommodations. When I was younger I stayed in Hostels, now that I am older, Elder hostels, Bed & Breakfast homes and Pensions.
Europe is rewarding but do not try and visit all of it at once, savor it and immerse yourself in one region at a time. Remember also that here in America you can say and do many things that you cannot in foreign countries. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is still the best advice.
Enjoy yourself and find the best of Europe. |

Right now, use the safest approach: via the Internet...until we gain more USA-friendly European countries: Waving the Stars n' Stripes in some overseas countries right now is NOT the smartest idea at the moment! |

by bus and it is really cheap like 20 bucks per person or so
or by train which is not very safe
maybe this is wat me momy say
A Eurail pass of course! You can buy a train ticket for around a 150 Euros and start off in England then take the "Chunnel" to Paris and on to Brussels, Vienna. Lisbon or Barcelona. For less than the cost of a interstate plane ticket you can see the whole of Europe quickly and efficiently. I wouldnt go with the "Youth Hostel" housing option though- book your hotels with local B and B's if you can, and Keep your copy of "Rick Steve's back door pass to Europe" in your Knap Sack. Hes full of good advice! |

Definitely get a EurRail Flexpass. Sticking to the Major cities by train gives you more flexibility on where and when you travel. Learn German because in most of those country people speak it. Travel through Switzerland by day because it is so beautiful. Try to use the "InnerCity" train lines because they have restaurant cars. |

Backpacking has always been a popular method, but you'll need to plan where you want to go, so you don't get into the trouble areas. |
