What is the best way to learn to speak Polish? |
From home. Have you done it? There's so many different courses, Rosetta Stone, Linguaphone etc. etc. Which did you use? There is a big difference in prices also. What did you pay? Did anyone have a bad experience with a poor course? How long did it take you to be fluent? I have just got back from Krakow and it is a beautiful place with very warm friendly people, I will go back to Poland next year, maybe Gdansk or Warsaw or do you recommend somewhere else. Also with there being a lot of Polish people in Britain it would be a good idea to learn their language I think so that's what I intend to do on the coming winter nights. Any tips most welcome, thanks. |

Learning to speak Polish is like diving into freezing cold water. Its hard at first but then...you start to enjoy it.
I have been living in Warsaw for 7 months now....and finally have a hold on Polish. The problem with learning from a book or from a cd is that you really aren't getting the quality of the language.
Polish is a fantastic language that should be taught be a native speaker. You have to learn how you learn first.
My method was getting right down to it. I moved here, made friends, and FORCED myself to pay attention to them when they were speaking Polish. We ended up being each others walking dictionaries.
So for you I would say...if you have the chance, make the leap and come here. Its a beautiful country full of culture and a vibrant language :)
And if your ever in need of some references for speaking polish, and are in Warsaw..IM me. I can give you a few people who are great teachers.
Good Luck on your Polish journey :) |

Rosetta Is easiest for sure. The funnest way & quickest would be to stay in Poland for 6-7 months. |

a work colleague of mine has a Polish lesson each morning, he uses skype, and has a lesson from a Polish language teacher, he is about a year into it and can stand up and do a presentation in Polish to a large group of people, it works for him
i've found the best way is to work with someone Polish and learn from them, ive picked enough up to say, please, thank you, cheers, some food names, etc
its a complicated language though so be prepared for some hard work |

Take a class at a local school or look to see if there are any offerings. I know many people who learned at a community college and speak it very well now. Another way you could learn is through a teaching cd or something similar. And remember always practice with anyone speaking Polish to have a dialouge which will help you tons. |

I heard that the rosettastone is not bad.
On the other hand I graduated in foreign languages, and I know that some courses for foreigners do not teach a REAL and CONTEMPORARY language, and sometimes contain really funny mistakes (that was especially for courses of Polish for French people).
But I would also consider possibilities given by skype, like mentioned above me, to have a direct contact with native Polish speaker.
Personally, I think that without any possibility of direct communication with a native speaker it may be really difficult and sometimes disappointing. Don't want to discourage you, just to prepare you that this language is subject to a constant evolution, so even native speakers have sometimes problems to understand what young people are saying... Besides grammar is terrible and totally different than English.
Anyway, it's really doable so good luck and pick up the gauntlet! |

That's very nice to hear such good opinions about my country. I'm glad:). If you want to know polish you can try to learn on your own.
Of course a nice textbook and translator would be helpful as well.
But the most important thing is to spend for example, a coffee break with polish people. They can teach you some basic words to communicate and make you feel like a polish person:P Talking and spending time with some polish citizens is the best language course.
By the way, hope you will come to Gdańsk. It's a very interesting city:).

I am currently learning Polish on my own right now. The absolute best way to learn a foreign language is to visit the mother country and try to speak it with native speakers and learn to get along there. From home, I've heard that Rosetta Stone is a good program to use. My method uses an amalgam of information gathered from various sources. When I learned French, I used a textbook from an old school and did the exercises contained within. Whatever you do, make sure you have plenty of exercises to practice with so you can drill the concepts.
I am having the most difficult time with learning the different cases and when to use them. I'm starting to get it, and with practice I think I'll be fine. Aside from that, the most difficult thing about learning any foreign language is vocabulary. |

If you have an ipod on itunes you can get Polish lessons. (my brother in law does that!
But really I don't know I'm already fluent in Polish and I am Polish.
well good luck!
tip:when on a plane (if you decide to go again to Poland or some other country) chew gum or listen to music so your ears don't pop!
