Budapest (pronounced [ˈbʊdɑpɛʃt]) is the capital city of Hungary and the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial and transportation centre. The official language spoken is Hungarian. Budapest has approximately 1.6 million inhabitants, down from a mid-1980s peak of 2.1 million. Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with the amalgamation on 17 November 1873 of right-bank (west) Buda (Ofen in German) and Óbuda (Old Buda or Alt-Ofen) together with Pest on the left (east) bank. It is the ninth largest city in the European Union.

Buda and Pest are the two towns on opposite sides of the Danube river that give Hungary's capitol its name.

what PrettyEskimo said is not true, Hungarians consider Budapest as a capital and not Pest. They do not separate the 2 parts of the city if they talk about their capital.

This is a trick question. Actually Pest is now considered the capital of Hungary by Hungarians. Buda the city on the other side, the historical side doesn't have much to do with Politics anymore. All the embassy's, parliment and state building are in Pest... So, Pest and not Buda Pest. I live there and no this for a fact. The riots happened in Pest, heroes square in Pest, the zoo in Pest... That's like saying what the capital of MN? is it MinneapolisSt.Paul...no, it is not. Budapest used to be the capital,

During the history of Hungary and the Kingdom of Hungary, the country has had more than one capital city. These were:
Székesfehérvár and Esztergom from around 1000 until 1361, but the function of a capital was not that clear as it is today
Buda 1361–1536
Pressburg (today Bratislava; Hungarian: Pozsony, Slovak: Prešporok) (1536–1848 for Royal Hungary and the Kingdom of Hungary)
Buda again 1848–1873, but the country was part of Austria from 1849 till 1867, so the true capital was Vienna (Bécs).
Budapest (including Buda) 1873–2004
Pest(not including Buda) 2005-present

...or I guess the capital of Hungary could be construed to be 'H', something which you have evidently failed to recognise.
