Amsterdam = the capital of the Netherlands
The Hague = the capitol (seat of government) of the Netherlands.
Even Dutch people themselves get confused sometimes (though in Dutch we don't have the confusing similar terms for the two).
To make things worse: Amsterdam is in the province of North Holland, but it isn't the capital of that province - that's Haarlem. :-)

Well, I'm from the Netherlands and I'm happy to tell you that the capital of the Netherlands is AMSTERDAM and NOT The Hague. The Hague is where the government is located, but that's not the capital city.
So trust me, you're right, the capital is Amsterdam.
