It is what remains of the ancient State of The Church which in the past, until the unification of Italy ( in 1861), covered the Central part of Italy... But Pope did not want to be annexed to the Kingdom of Italy ( he wanted remain the sovereign in his state) so he excommunicated Italy and he declared himself political prisoner...

In 1929 under Mussolini, the Pope managed to have an own state thank to Lateran Treaty : Vatican city ( 0,44 kmq), in Rome, it is a symbolical state which is composed by St. Peter Square, St. Peter Basilica, Vatican Museums, ad many other monuments...

Curiosity:

Today, it is the only state in the world with an absolute monarchy where the Pope is the king...

Vatican City...eehhhr Vatican Country is in Rome, Italy. Is not exactly in the center of Rome, but you can easily reach it walking (if time allows) or by the subway. I would recommend a visit to St. Pietro chuch but also to the Sistine Chapel with it's famous paintings.

All best,
radu

Vatican City is completely surrounded by the city of Rome, Italy.

Here is the official website of the Vatican City State: http://www.vaticanstate.va/EN/homepage.htm

And the U.S. Department of State's web page for the Vatican City State: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3819.htm
