it is in a decreasing trend. in 2006:

turban (religious headscarf):11.4 % (more common among young people
burqa: 1.1% (mostly in Çarşamba, Fatih, Istanbul and some other conservative districts)
rest (traditional head scarves, etc): 51.1% (more common in rural areas)
not veiled: 36.4% (more common in big cities)

Around 60% I know realtives mainly older and more devot women cover up, a lot of the Turks I know here in america don't cover up though.

Religion and state are separate in Turkey. Women are not allowed to wear headscarves at school, universities etc.
The religion also stipulates that alcohol may be consumed for medicinal purposes, even a broken heart;)

not much seen as 30/40 percent of the population is alevi muslims who in their religion aren't supposed to wear a headscarf.
also we have an hijab ban, which means wearing a hijab is forbidden in certain places in turkey.

Turkey is a secular country meaning they dont have to wear a headscarf but some women still do wear headscarf because of strong religious belief.and 99% can't be right
Girls in schools dont wear headscarfs

Alex G
wtf that is not true i mean not 99% come on its more like 70 or 75% i mean my moms or my dads sides dont cover up besides the elderly they are the only ones that cover up

Yurgis
I don't know, but one thing is sure, in modern and big cities such as Istanbul the percentage is much more lower than in rural and poor zones...

Curiousity killed the cat
99% of the population is Muslim (UN stats), but I have a bunch of Turkish friends, and none of them wore headscarves, in fact they also wore short skirts and drank alcohol, so they were pretty liberal! And my boyfriend is Turkish and he says, because Turkey is a secular state, Islam is not so enforced, and women don't feel such pressure to wear headscarves. Then again, I watched a BBC documentary recently, about Turkey, and I'd say about 40% of the women were wearing headscarves.

I wonder why you want to know?

so what?
99%

Turkish women have to be completely covered at all times. What do you think about this joke i just made up?

Q: Why didnt the Turkish woman dress up as a ghost for Halloween?

A: Because she said the point of Halloween is to go as something different from what you look like the rest of the year
