To my opinion the old city of Xanthi, which is a mixture of many different architectural rythms but beautifully combined, and the medieval city of Rodos, which is unique in the south-eastern mediterranean.

The prettiest city in greece i can't really figure out, but the most beautiful town in greece is Thessaloniki.

I went to Lindos for many years. It can be very crowded with day visitors, but very pretty indeed. BUT - then i discovered Parga on the mainland! what a fantastic place. I strongly recommend that you go on the website, parga.com, and see the pictures that people have uploaded. I am an amateur artist and I was kept very busy for two weeks. everyone we spoke to there was on their second/third/forth(etc.) visit. The only problem is, once visited you become a Parga Bore (see Above)

Patra is a big city famous for its carnival
Heraclion in Crete aw full city but in the correct place in the heart of Creta.
Larissa is nice if you are visiting for an Agricultural congress.
Kastoria is nice for the weekends to. Edessa.
you have millions of options.

I just spent a week in Greece ... my suggestion is to spend a each day or two in different cities, you see more of Greece and what one person likes may not be what you like.

Alexios Komninos
Definately Thesaloniki (Salonica) and Kavala.

There are many beautiful cities in Greece but my favorite is Nafplion.

First of all, Thessaloniki is definitely a city, not a town. And it is interesting, with many monuments.

Athens is a must too. You can't miss the Acropolis, the old town of Plaka etc.

Other nice neoclassical towns are: Ermoupolis on Syros island,
Nafplio, with the nearby archaeological sites of Mycenae and Epidauros,
and Corfu.

Wonderful picturesque vernacular towns are found on most islands, like Myconos, Santorini, Paros, etc., but only in the summer they are recommended.

The medieval town of Rhodes is a World Heritage Site, and it is wonderful. Great beaches too!

Also, you may want to visit Ioannina, a beutiful medieval city with a lake on which is found a castle town, and the nearby traditional villages of Zagorochoria.

Or Trikala and the nearby impressive Meteora, the huge rocks with old monasteries on top.

Or Delphi, if you like skiing now in winter, and visit the nearby arcaheological site and definitely the byzantine monastery of Hosios Lukas. It is a must.

Or combination of the above. If you have Athens as a base, you can go to all of these, on 1-day (Delphi or Nafplio) or 3-day trips(Ioannina or Meteora or Syros+Myconos), if you have time.

mine!!!im just kidding..i think that volos is a great place ...its not as noisy as AThens or Salonika but its a big city which offers many services...Moreover,with a 10 minutes drive you can go to the wonderful beaches near mountain pilio and you can enjoy yourself in its villages..But i think that the best thing about the city is tsipouradika..tsipouradika is smth like taverna (i think you no about em)with delicious food combined by the traditional tsipoyro(drink with high alchohol degree)soo greek!!the port is surrounded by cafes and the entertainment facilities are good especially in summer...its a wonderful city ...lot of history...

I am Greek and I believe that Greece is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The islands are magnificent and its -much underrated- mountains are also wonderful.
Having said that, I must admit that the mainland Greece has the ugliest cities in Europe (compared even to other Balkan countries). They are not dirty or poor but they are flat, without personality, without green, without architecture.
There are pretty cities in the islands though. The best: Chania (Crete), Corfu, Rhodes (in that order). And numerous cute towns all over the islands.
Thessaloníki is in an excellent location and has some beautiful spots but, overall, is not overwhelming.
If beauty is not your only criterion but you are also considering other factors like fun and night life, then you can not find easily better places in the whole world. Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras are the best in this area.
I am writing all these because you asked about CITIES.
If going to a city is not a must, my recommendation, if you come in the winter is to take a tour to the main archaeological sites (Delfi, Olympia, Mycenes) or go to Crete or take a tour to Peloponesse. If you come in the summer, just choose any island.

A very subjective question. Some think Athens is "pretty", others, including me think Thessaloniki is. But then again in its own way so is Volos.
Greece is not really to be appreciated by its cities if one disregards the obligatory visit to the antiquities and museums within them. The "Pretty" parts of Greece are her islands and countryside generally. Cities like Patras, Irakleion, Larissa, Lamia etc are overcrowded and rather polluted.

For me, the prettiest place is Oia in Santorini but it's not a city
http://www.trekearth.com/search.php?phrase=oia&type=

Chania in Crete comes second
http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&svnum=10&hl=en&q=chania

Many people love Nafplio, which is quite charming as well, but I find it overrated. It's similar to other mediterranean towns and therefore less characterisic of Greece.

Pretty hmmmmmm??????

OOPS I don't know. Maybe Corfu.

I think it depends - beauty is in the eye of the beholder - I would definitely NOT say Athens is 'pretty'! Lived there 10 yrs! I strongly disgree with Manolis - have you ever been to Ioannina? it's lovely! Maybe not to everyone's taste as it's not near the sea - but very nice in my opinion! Patra/Thessaloniki/Athens are major cities and although great to live in - I wouldn't call them 'pretty'.
Towns and villages in Greece (islands and mainland) can hold the title of 'pretty'. and not major/bustling cities!

Although I am biased as I live here - my 'pretty' point goes to Preveza which is a town and NOT dependant on tourism

davet92 -we live 30 mins away from Parga - great place! The beach from there to Preveza is a must see! 25kms! We go for lunches in summer to Parga - best time is 14/15th Aug - brilliant celebration!

Airpole
Being strongly biased I would say Corfu. You come and I'll show you why .
