What is there to be proud of?

I mean since we are talking about women rights, headscarves and so...
Wearing headscarves is freedom? How can somebody be free or can claim that she is free or she wants freedom when what she/he is defending is contrary to freedom?
This is a paradox...

Lime: this is not about clothes. you have to understand that.

The freedom of wearing headscarves is the freedom to allow your man to limit your freedom. So, in essence, it is a freedom for men to suppress. So, there's no paradox. A male dominated parliament is opting to suppress women. It is up to women to buy it or not.

There's also the matter of the Stockholm syndrome. Because covered women have no other choice, either they will live through their lives knowing they are suppressed and I guess that's a heavy burden to carry, or they will start believing they are covering themselves up with their free will.

Freeing women is giving them the right to choose.

If someone wants to do something they can. We can't stop them! This is what we call freedom. Maybe a girl wants to wear headscarf why are we telling her that she shouldn't. Wearing a headscarf is no different than wearing pants or shorts or whatever. I don't talk about the politics or whatever. I just talk about the human rights. Every single people free to do whatever they want. I really don't care what people wear, I'm interested in their thoughts and ideas not clothes. By the way today we lost our 15 soldiers and we are still talking about headscarves. This is not a really big problem in these days really.
I don't understand people's concern about headscarves and I won't understand it. This is what I understand from being free. Every one is free to think, wear or do whatever they want. Religion is not a shame. If someone believe that their religion requires to wear headscarves then they are definitely free to wear it. Sorry but this is my opinion. My personal hatred to politicians doesn't effect my thoughts for religious people or human rights.
You can't stop a parent from forcing their child to anything. Forbid the headscarves and are you sure nothing will be the next? Come on! If a parent wants their daughter to wear a headscarf they won't think like: "This is forbidden so my daughter can go to the school without it." no they will think like: "If headscarf is forbidden then my daughter won't be going to school." Forbidding something can't help solve anything.
I didn't tell you forcing a child is okay! Please don't accuse me with the things I didn't even say. I just tell you If a parent is not a good one you can not make them good parents by forbiddings. Anyway It seems like you'll always get me wrong in this conversation. Because for the second time you're telling me the things I didn't even mean. You won't be receiving any future answers from me regarding this subject.
Case closed for me!
Thanks.

in the book its written, you dont show off your ibadet...it should be between god and the person...

so how can anyone say they are more Muslim, or better people.....only one can say and its the god itself cos he can see our hearts...

unfortunately its again the wonderful(!) outsiders games, trying to separate us, like they did before, it was then right wing and left wing, then Turk- Kurd, now its Muslim and not proper Muslim....and unfortunately we all fall for these games then dont even notice what we are losing as a country...

I guess the freedom to choose how you want to be free.
I don't want to wear a headscarf but everybody else can.
Women who are used to scarves report feeling safe with them on, from what I'd have to guess.
I guess we all dress in a way that conveys the way we see ourselves and for the kind of attention we are comfortable with. I recognize that it is not the scarf that you object to, it is the symbol of what it is being used for politically and the direction everything is going in.

hmmmmmmm

I kinda see like the more choices (personal choices) people have, then the freer we all are

if people want to wear hats or scarves or run naked or whatever, I would support their right to choose

the girl next door
It takes a good brain washing for someone to claim that covering your hair is you own free will. It's like when "Hitler" said" Arbeit mach frei" " Work makes you free" and lead them right to the gas chambers.

So yeah, if a woman sais that is her free will, its because she was trained to say so befor. And when you say something often enogh you end up believing it yourself!

ele
I believe that the women in Turkey who are wearing headscarves choose to dress that way thus we can't say they're not free...However sometimes I feel it's true that things are strict and there's not much freedom...Maybe it's the religion, or even the years of tradition...those things cannot be erased from one day to the other...

this is about politics of life and representation.
if you want to be represented politically you strive for an identity.
headscarf is a way to belong a distinctive identity.
an identity that is closer to its religion more than its nation.
the freedom sought after by a scarf is the freedom to have that identity represented publicly.

You know, the tragedy behind religions is that people follow -uncritically- scripts written centuries ago (and which applied to specific periods and sociopolitical circumstances) and refuse to adapt to developments and change in general. Even though we live in the 21st century, we still conform to rules imposed on us by state and religion. It doesn't matter whether you're a muslim or a christian or a buddhist. Same thing happens in every religion, and you're right-it's beyond that. It's because this suits some people just fine!

I haven't read most of the answers because they were too long. For me, It's ok to have the freedom to choose what you want to wear BUT those who enjoy those freedoms should also know what their limitations are and how the world works.

People especially Muslim women now have this wrong perception especially with all the "Muslim hype" that makes them all the more want to wear headscarves to show their freedom in religion. I have no problems with that, that is their faith.

BUT if that person enters a secular school where one does not pray, see the ten commandments or does not have anything remotely religious going on, My suggestion would be is to leave your religion at the front steps.

In restaurants there is a term, "We have the right to refuse service", they should also place that sign or some form of it in airports, schools, government buildings so as to be fair and impartial to everyone.

I for one don't want to see women in Burqas or headscarves in airports, why? For my security as well as the peace of mind of other people. Anything can be done and anything can be placed anywhere. To hell with what their religion doesn't approve of, I just want to be able to come home to my family in one piece. If uniformity is the answer then so be it.

That goes the same for those who understand why they have to remove their hijabs when taking driver's licenses or whatever. It's not a restriction to anything, it is just a rule. Times change and peoples change, and it is also common sense that rules will change. We just have to obey it. If one does not like it, then don't fly, find an airport that will accommodate you or a DMV in Iran that would agree to that.

Everyone has their beliefs, if you want to wear a headscarf to school fine, find an Islamic one. It is good to practice your freedom of choice through one's religion but in that, they have to respect other people as well. If Muslims go to Mecca and don that all-white thing to the procession (am not familiar with this so just bear with me) so as to create uniformity, the same should be practiced in places where it is distinctlively secular.

If my son came home a Buddhist and chanted or whatever, I would tell him to take his religion elsewhere. So it's up to him if he will cease and desist, find a temple or decide to leave my house. It's his choice but as for me, I will have none of that under my roof. He can picket and protest up to the high heavens, and it won't make a difference. To hell with his freedom, it is my friggin' house.

When God said to Adam and Eve, you can have everything and eat everything in the garden EXCEPT that one. Did they say "unfair?" or "That goes against our rights?!"

Various types of freedom also comes with restrictions or else humankind wouldn't be in trouble in the first place right?

Pelin i dont think that they are taking out the woman s rights. These women are conscious of what they do and of their position, and i am sure they want it like that.
Have you seen the protest at the universities of Europe when they said no religious symbols?
So, concerning the headscarves they want it, and they are proud of it.The same their husbands, i dont think they imposed it, they just want a religious woman thats all...
I dont defend anyone, but if tomorrow a law forbids the coverage, be sure that those who will protest there will be these women first.
excuse me...since when Turkey became so liberal concerning the religion, when there are so many protests about the existence of the Patriarcate in Istanbul?

We might also consider what freedom means to us. I agree 100% with everything Dellarovere had to say. U.S. and allies imposed a lifestyle on us that I can no longer feel free with. It brought only crime, deception and war with it in the name of Christian religion. I am glad to see the Muslims fighting back and hopefully the world will change!

there is all the pride in islam when a women and a child with self consciousness realize something and by total internal belief do it,muslims pray five times a day ,they wash and pray ,they wake up before dawn and pray ,deprive thier eyes from sleep and remember their creator ,no one forces them to do it except the internal belief inside them ,take away this from muslims and preven them from praying ,what are u doing ,YOU ARE INTERFERING IN THIER BELIEF AND FREEDOM OF CHOICE ,headscarf and women ,little girls is based on same ,its not forced its choosen and take a good insight in all muslim nations before you post such question becoz u dont know anything about islam and freedom ,islam is religion of simplicity not complexity ,purity ,and peace ,its name islam comes from salam means religion of peace ,who wear it choose it and who dont arent disrespected

My problem actually runs deeper. Much deeper than Islamic scarfs.

Religions (any) have a long history of power control through mass control. All religions have survived and continue to do so on the basis of "you are wrong and I am right". Amongst all religions, none ever did, does or will ever sacrifice its own existence for human love, peace and prosperity. Instead, religions are more than eager to spread the hatred among the masses to serve their interests. No matter the cost, the lost lives and the pain. Occasionally, religions will even place themselves above national identity. Any culture or nation cannot be valuable as long as it does not serve the interests of their doctrines which are only used as an excuse for power. Because it does not matter if religions call him Allah or God as long as it is their Allah or God. Not that of the others.

Then again, their God needs power...That is masses that would be identifiable, noted, and with distinct marks. Which they call traditions. Their traditions. Not the national ones. Theirs. Which will be gradually replace the national ones.

Thinking along these lines, what exactly is the purpose of wearing the scarf? To identify yourself? Group yourself? The urge to belong somewhere?

The scarf does not really symbolizes anything and can hardly be considered an Islamic tradition (its not really). Even worse, it is an additive for or even a full replacement of the personality of anyone that wears it. It is dangerous as dangerous is any Christian doctrine that spreads the hatred against the scarf in the Western world.

Symbols often represent beliefs. Beliefs form the basis of doctrines. Doctrines serve the interests of the very few. Not the many. And the danger is out there once the very few push the many to think as one.

And so many old, wonderful cultures were destroyed in the name of Islamic, Christian, totalitarian (soviet) or other "you are either with us or against us" doctrines.

And so Turkey owes its existence to its army (power 1) or Islam (power 2) that will tear apart the nation in pieces. Because either worths more than Turkey and both claim it...

And so ancient Greece became modern Jerusalem huh..sorry Christian and abandoned for many centuries words such as...democracy. And now days, Greeks are not any Christians. They are our Christians (the orthodox ones). Very different from the others. All others. And better. And greater. And full with hatred and ready to kill for us.

Scarf??? Hallelujah...

Its not about the scarf. Its about how we will free our minds from "scarfs". Education, education and education is the only answer to respect yourself and get rid of "scarfs".
