The Rijksmuseum is filled with Dutch 17 century paintings. Ten euro it costs. The Stedelijk Museum (these days situated near Central Station in Amsterdam) is the best in contemporary art. The Stedelijk costs nine euro. The Van Gogh is also worthwhile. Ten euro.
If the weather is good, the Vondelpark is a must visit and a trip on the canals is also very good. Canal trips are the favourite of most tourists 2 hours costs around 20 euro. There is also a possibility to rent a canal bike (www.canaltrips.nl), no prices there.

Neighbourhoods to walk: Jordaan and de Pijp. The Pijp also has a nice market (Albert Cuyp, not on sundays) and a park (Sarphatipark).

All in all you can do a lot here, but just walking around the canals can be fun. Most tourists also visit the Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein for cafes.
Enjoy your stay, I do every day.

Depends what you like. You can take a walk and see the old houses and the canals. Or take a tour with one of the boats trough the canals. And there are museums.

for information look at http://www.vvvamsterdam.nl/, that's the official tourist site. VVV is dutch for tourist information.

there is a LOT to do in amsterdam besides the weed and whores.

there are many beautiful museums, shops, and other tourist attractions.

worth at least a couple days, if you're doing a europe trip. i wouldnt go just to amsterdam & back though, if you aren't interested in the w&w.

Take a boat trip on the canals. Visit the Rijksmuseum, (Dutch masters, including Rembrandt). There are also various other museums, including the van Gogh museum. Den Haag is the administrative centre, but Amsterdam is the capital city. It has many beautiful buildings. Indonesian restaurants are fantastic. Definitely worth a visit, and the surrounding countryside might be a bit flat, but it's still very picturesque.

There is plenty, Its a Major European City & Capital City of The Netherlands. Van Gogh Art Gallery, Anne Franks House, Rembrandts House. The Royal Dutch Opera House, Diamond Factories, The canals & canal tours, Lots of Street Theatres...Dam Square is interesting. There are loads of shops & markets. There is a flower market. Museams. Endless bars, pubs, coffee shops, hotels, clubs & restuarants. There are good sports facilities. Amsterdam is my fave city

I'm going to Amsterdam at the end of the month with a group of workmates. It's just for two nights as I think that is long enough for a first trip with limited funds. I don't know about you but I'm going for the cheese!
Seriously though, there's loads to do (hopefully!!). Museums and galleries, walks, brewery trips, bike rides. Book a flight and get yourself there. You'll never know unless you go!!!

Take a boat ride round the canals. You can buy an all-in ticket which gives you entrance to the museums. Don't bother with the Rijksmuseum unless you like Mouldie Oldies and fat aristocratic kids. The Stedelijk is better :-D

Oh, there are also brewery tours, if you like that kind of thing. And Anne Frank's house, which everyone heads to.

You could also rent a bike and cycle round seeing stuff. I love Amsterdam, it's great :-)

The art museums are amazing. There's Hals, and Vermeer, among others. There are really nice cafes where they serve really good coffee. The canals are interesting, providing a different kind of scenery than you get in most other cities. And the flower markets are beautiful.

I liked the Dutch people I met as well. And everyone rides a bicycle!

There's more to see than Amsterdam alone!!!

Go visit Leiden, Maastricht, Rotterdam or Utrecht...

Its worth visiting just for the atmosphere to sit in the cafes and watch the world go by eating really good apple pie and drinking very good coffee. The Van Gogh Museum is a must - completely mind blowing - extremely good shopping.
the red light area is actually in a very beautiful part of the city, and its well worth visiting just to say you've been.
Although atmosphere is not as nice at night time mainly due to large amounts of drunk tourists.
