Actually, its a very common misconception that everything is legal in Amsterdam. Mostly everything is illegal, the law just isn't enforced. Prostitution is legal and regulated. |

Weed is not legal in the Netherlands, it is merely tolerated. The police have a 'divide and conquer' attitude to the drugs culture - they leave the coffeeshops and marijuana dealers pretty much alone, and concentrate on getting the people who deal in cocaine, heroine and other Class A substances.
The thinking behind this is simple. If the soft drugs dealers can deal away with the relatively (I say relatively!) harmless stuff, then they will not start dealing the very serious stuff - as long as the dealers themselves keep to unwritten agreement, everyone is happy. Nonetheless, marijuana is not, according to the letter of the law, legal in the Netherlands. It is merely considered the lesser of the two evils, and people who experiment with it are less inclined to become immediately addicted to it, and then the dealers cannot put them onto something harder in order to make more money. This is why you can buy and use a small amount of marijuana in the Netherlands. Don't try to sell it though. You are not a recognised dealer and they won't like it if you are trying to muscle in on their turf. |

Weed isn't legal, check the long post on here.
Same as magic mushrooms (although they want those to be illegal now).
Prostitution is legal if you have the right permits which are not easy to get.
You can drink low alcohol drinks when you are sixteen, this means anything 14,99 percent alcohol or less. When you're eighteen you are an adult and you can drink anything, vote, drive, etc.
I assume this were the things you wanted to know about. There's a whole lot more about the Netherlands, though.
Amsterdam is just a very small part of the Netherlands, and I don't find it as interesting as other cities myself. There's weed and prostitution in The Hague too, where our government is (Prime Minister, Queen).
Amsterdam just got the label. |

As to "parts" of the city. This is in so far true that, like with many other countries, cities will regulate buildings and their use by allocating certain areas for specific purposes like shops, schools, living, industry, recreation, etc. There are also laws which limit the amount of hindrance (noice, smell, sound) a location can create. These things will mean that only certain locations are avialable for prostitution, bars and coffeeshops (and any other type of bussiness). A coffeshop may not get a permit to start near a school for instance. For these and other reasons you will often find similar bussinesses in the same area. But this does not mean there are none in other areas. Coffeeshops and bars tend to be spread across the whole town for instance.
As to what is and is not forbidden in the Netherlands (not jsut Amsterdam), Orla and Dutchgirl already replied some things. I recently replied on such a question here:

Softdrugs (weed) are legal. The softdrugs are sold in coffeeshops. Foreigners might appreciate the experience of asking for the 'menu'.
You'll find them throughout the city but they are relatively inconspicuous. There are far more bars and cafe's than coffeeshops.
The coffeeshops are a way of separating softdrugs from harddrugs.
Harddrugs are illegal. Meth is illegal, especially on the sidewalk.
They have to catch you first, however, and if you're not dealing you'll likely get a slap on the wrist.
Smoking weed on the street is commonly done, but it might offend the odd policeman. Don't exhale in his face, show respect and you'll be left alone.
Prostitution is regulated in the sense that there is a district for it. In that district, sex for money is all that's going on. Outside the district your religious grandparents can enjoy Amsterdam without offense. |
