A toothbrush, she might stick out like a sore thumb though.

I would just give her some money.. It is a nice idea to get her something, but most of the time what people want most is money this way they can buy what they want and when they come back they can show you what they got..

A phrase book is always useful.....boring maybe, but damn useful.

An electrical adaptor is good as well, but bear in mind they only change the pin configuration and not the actual voltage....so they only work if what you have is multi-voltage.
If you stick a 120v appliance into a 240v socket it won't work well at all.

Best of all, a bum or fanny bag...which ever you call it.
If you're a tourist you're a dead givaway...everyone knows you have money and are not familiar with the routine of where you are.
Have your valuables in your bag on your body rather than in your pocket or over your shoulder.

A final tip is to carry a second wallet or purse with a few notes of local currency and a couple of expired credit cards in it.....if you do get a problem just hand it over and with luck whoever it is will just run off and check it later leaving you safe and with your real money intact.

The adapter for electrical appliances is the best suggestion, but something I also found is that all batteries are not created equally. If she/he has a camera or anything with batteries, send a pack of North American batteries. I nearly destroyed a digital camera assuming AA were the same everywhere. Not! Do not send videos, they won't play on their VCR's or DVD players.

first aid kit which include anti-diarrhea tabs, cold tabs, etc.. OR a talking electronic language converter.

got them useful when i went to france, i'm asian.

Get her a portable adapter for her electric hair care products
Some parts of europe run different cycles and amps.

Nicky
Some nice head wear - especially if she plans to visit sunnier regions in summer. Sun protection while travelling is important but its better if it does not make us look too much like tourists :)

ducky
while I was travelling I got a combination hair dryer/clothes iron....it was awsome. It was very compact and so didn't take up a lot of room. Just make sure it has adaptors for Europe.

rustyg99
Infltable hangers to use after hand washing clothes. These come in very handy when traveling to Europe with a limited amount of clothing.

mory_il
make her an easy travel kit:

A money bag that she can wear underneath the clothes that wouldn't get stolen.
A power adapter.
A CD with good songs to listen to on the way!
A letter to read on the plane with funny things and important phone numbers.

Hope that helps. :)

A nice passport holder may be a good gift. Or extra batteries and film for her camera. Just think of simple things. A couple of good books for the plane ride would be nice too.

A "backpack" and "water bottle". Whether or not she will be "walking" (which is the cheapest thing to do in Europe) anywhere she can always use a "backpack" for anything from storing items purchased to send back home to storing food items for her to eat. You can use a "backpack" to store anything for use at any time. And in particular you can store a "water bottle" there. You can purchase a large bottle of water, transfer some as needed to the water bottle and take it anywhere you go.

amoureuxdecureuil
A stein with your picture on it. That way you can always be her drinking buddy. That what I am going to do with my Dutch-merican friend.

Money works well, because if her bags are stuffed, she won't have room for your gift. I've had that happen to me with my Korean/German friend, so I secretly sent it to her German address.

daiunus
a plug adaptor!!!!! What a pain that can be hehe.

If not that, it depends.. a language phrase book might come in handy if it is another language other than her own. A tourist book? there are a few suggestions anyway.

An international telephone card so that she can call back to the States if she needs to. AT&T sells them and that way if she doesn't need it while she's there she can always use it when she comes home. It's a long flight so you may also want to put together a little gift bag filled with things she can use on the plane. (magazine, book, DVD, those little eye covers, candy bars) Hope she enjoy's it is a very beautifull country.
