Heineken brewery.
The Jordaan area
Kadinsky (coffee shop) on Rosmarijnsteeg. Very much more relaxed than some of the more central ones. Not threatening or intimidating like some in the centre. You can play backgammon / chess etc. while enjoying your smoke.
De Jaren Cafe (not a coffee shop, but a cafe, have lunch overlooking the Amstel river)
Begijnhof. (old alms-houses in centre of Amsterdam, open until 5pm, v. beautiful, near to Spuistraat)
Westergasfabriek (former industrial factory, now clubbing place - for your night-time clubbing requirements)
Train trip to Leiden (45min), or Delft (1 hour) , or The Hague (55min)
Vondelpark. |

I agree on the bike ride; however, you don't need to buy one, just rent one:

I always recommend taking the canal tour (you catch it near the Leidesplein). You travel all around the city, and can make note of places you'd like to explore further.
In my opinion, you must see the Anne Frank House. Also, as a huge Van Gogh fan, I recommend the Van Gogh museum. There's nothing like seeing those paintings up close.
The Melkveg has lots of music (and don't miss the space cakes). Boom Chicago is fun improv in English. (Both of them on the Leidesplein.) And as long as you're there, might as well stop by a coffee shop for some smoke. |

RENT A BICYCLE and check out Anne Frank.s house. Check out the canals. If you do partake, go to the hashish coffeehouses. Study the architecture and go to the museums. Talk to the locals at cafes The Dutch are the most friendly and most speak English. |

I personally found anne Franks haus the best thing....I also found it quite moving having read the book etc.
Just walking around is nice, and the canals are buildings are pretty unique, but as pointed out there are bikes for Africa and it would be a good way to get around.
There is the red light district to peruse and you can go to the sex museum.
The museums eg Van gogh, national one
There are day tours to tulip fields, windmills etc which you can book once you get there...I found it much smaller than other capital cities and you will find you can do quite a bit in that time. |

As well as the Red Light District and coffeeshops, there is the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank house, and don't forget a boot trip along the canals. And make sure to try some of the Indonesian restaurants, ask a local person to recommend one for you. |

Take enough money to buy three bikes... Cycle all over. EVERYBODY rides bikes in Holland. When you're done with them sell them back to the place you bought them from they're all second hand anyway. |

Why not try some good beer? I don't mean English lager like Stella or Fosters. I mean proper beer from Belgium or Holland. All three of the pubs listed serve at least 200 beers, some up to 12% in alcohol.

If you want to try them all. Here's a guide to the best pubs in the city by an Englishman who's lived there for 25 years.

Look out for La Chouffe on tap.
Enjoy! |

First of all if you are considering visiting the Reeperbahn you may wish to take a bulk supply of condoms. What you choose to do depends on your interests, and budget. I hope the links below will be useful and you have a good trip. |
