Here is my dilema: Okay, I am a 25 yr old female. I am a U.S citizen with a Greek Heritage. My father was the Greek in the family and we lived here in Greece for several years at a time while I was growing up. He has now passed.
In 2005 I was offered a great job here in Greece and I accepted so I left Boca Raton, Florida and now still live in Greece only that, that job no longer exists and I am very frustrated. I was making really good money in my old job but the guy took off and left me hanging. Somehow for the last yr and a half I have managed to get by (barely) and have gone from 1 dead end job to another because I don't have the money it takes to go back home. I consider myself to be very smart and verstile meaning that I can do almost any line of work, but my passion/knowledge is Real Estate which is not good here in Greece as it is in Florida. What should I do? Do I stay here because it is a fab metropolitan city and get peanuts for pay or borrow $ from family to go back home |

I came across this problem in the early 90s when I had EVERYTHING stolen. I didn't even have enough money to buy something to eat - and nowhere to live (that's another story). I thought about going back to the UK - to be near my parents ... but then decided that even if I were to go back I wouldn't be able to live in my town as I had outgrown my childhood town - so moving away to another part would have meant I probably wouldn't have seen more of them than I did while living in Greece.
So I borrowed some money from a friend - stayed with her until I found an apartment - thankfully my job teaching re-started - I paid the money back and I'm still here today - so glad I didn't make the decision to go back!
But that's me and it's easier to say that when you are only a 4hr flight away from your parents. I left home at a young age and have never taken any handouts from my family so I was pretty much independant - I think it depends on the individual - for me being close to family wasn't important as I knew whether I was here or in UK I still wouldn't be living close to them.
If you found a great job tomorrow - would that make your decision to stay? Is it only the job or are there other reasons that make it better to leave?
Also don't think of your decision as a permanent one - nothing is engraved in stone - if you decide to go back to USA there's nothing to stop you returning to Greece in the future if that's what you decide!
Good luck! |

If I were you, I'd definitely go back home. You are an American citizen, which means no problem with the language,no problem with work permit, no problem....period!
To stay in a country where is hard to get a job and hard to get by is not understood.
Greece is a great country to be if (a big IF) a-you have a nice job and b-your whole family lives there.
In your case, none of the above applies, so now you are thinking with your heart and not your brain. You hear your brain telling you the right thing but you still doubt it.
Go back home to US and you will never regret it. (the flights are also at the lowest now).
Good luck with your decision |

I suggest you went where the people you love are. Do you have anyone in US, mama or sister, brother etc? I think this is where you should live, where there would be people to support you.
Good luck to you dear. |

You sound like you need the emotional support of your family now. Go back, at least for a while. Your bad experience in the last job and the low pay can make you a very bitter person if you're not supported by family and good friends. You can find a way to work in Greece again later. |

go back home with your family. Im sure with the money you could be making in FL you can pay them back w/o a problem (thats of they even ask for it back) If there's nothing for you in greece then why stay? I left Miami, b/c there was nothing for me there anymore. You should do the same. |

Borrow the money and go back. You have to do what makes you happy. |

,Just ,seriously sit down and weigh the pros and cons of it..take your time and it will be worth it...Which way do you think you will be happier? Happy is the only way to go in my eyes...What says you can't change your mind later on ....Who says you have to stay in one place forever...or even longer than you want? GOOD LUCK! |

I suggest you to borrow the money and go back to U.S. Whatever you decide though, I wish you all the best! |

Follow your dream, it sounds to me like you really want to go to Florida you just need that push to make you do it, beg, borrow, or steal, just get plane ticket and get out there, you sound like you are stuck in a rut at the moment, make a wonderful new life for yourself, I wish you every happiness for the future. |

IF you are not happy or content in Greece anymore, then why would you stay there? What is making you hang on? If you want to stay look for a new and better job, don't give up; but if you want to leave then find the means to go home. Lord knows they are out there.
If there is anything you can do to maintain your happiness if it is lost, then just do it.
Good luck to you and yours! |

I don't see the dilema. If you can't make enough money in Greece (which is a beautiful country) and you KNOW you can make a good living in the U.S. Go back to the U.S. and make enough money to one day move back to Greece and live the life you want. |

That fab metropolitan city that you love so much will be a good place to spend your vacations. As for a job, go back to Florida where you know the ropes, where the market is a bit better than in Greece and where I assume you have family and friends. I know it is a tough decision, but I think you will be happier back in USA. |

I think that you should borrow money from your family, and go to Florida for a small vacation, check out the situation, as I am sure you are aware, that real estate in America, is having one the biggest crisis ever, find out realistically what you want out of life, my using this time there to way your options, and then come back and decide with your family what is best for you....Dont make rash decisions,,,you could regret it later, Sorry about your father, he must have been young.... |
