How about a telephone calling card, so that he can make telephone calls back home to his family and friends. There's lots of different kinds and rates, and you can "charge it up" with as much money as you're willing to spend. Just Google "International Calling Card", or check out the link I've supplied below. (You can choose your own "from and to" calling countries with the drop-down menus).

I would recommend the Kiva Keychain Backpack. Comes in handy for extra stuff sometimes when traveling but is small enough to be out of the way.

For a more expensive gift, try the Marmot Ion Jacket. It's a very lightweight jacket I use often. Folds up out of the way but will keep the b/f warm and dry.

You didn't mention what price range, but a good gift for a guy traveling can be what he would probably need most (basic hygiene items, wrapped cleverly, placed in an attractive carry-on bag): shampoo, toothpaste/toothbrush, mouthwash, nice cologne, compact, battery-operated razor, batteries, nail kit, lighted, magnifying glass (those are needed for reading on the plane) when turning on an overhead light would bother the other flyers, dental floss, breath gel, reading material and crossword puzzle-type books to pass the time, hand-held games, small, stress-buster ball, small, hand-held neck massager (sold at Walgreens). The best gifts are items which can be used on a daily basis and also help pass the time when sitting idle on a plane or in an airport terminal.

Depending on how much she wants to spend, she could buy him a bag, like a suitcase, or a wallet, or a small handy camera, or a T-shirt or a bathimg suit, if he's going on holidays. Also a travel set of toiletries, like shampoo-shower gel-after shave-shaving foam-rasor-toothbrush and paste in a practical travel bag.
