Your best bet is to buy a mosquito repellent when you get there as it will be correct for the place, I was in Rimini in Italy once and there it is bad but once I used a local product recommended by the local chemist I had no more trouble, It is also hot in Greece so you should not have any trouble until dusk as the temperature and humidity are just right at that time. |

I've never heard of mosquitoes not liking lemon, but there's no harm in trying. What they REALLY don't like though is vitamin B complex - if you like marmite, eat some every day, otherwise take vitamin supplements although you need to nstart before you go. Apparently it makes you give off a slight scent (humans can't detect it) which makes you very unpleasant to mosquitoes. I do it, and it works - I live in the tropical rainforest, and have always been hugely appealing to mozzies until I started this. Hope this helps, and enjoy your holiday! |

apparently if you take anti histamines for 2 weeks before you go and keep taking them while you are there it keeps them away - I am going in September so will let you know if it works |

Baygon new modern electrical dispensers do protect you perfectly (with closed windows). With open windows you better use the above old remedies, or make sure you sleep in a room with ceiling ventilator (on), as this little insects can not fly in air currents.
I have never suffered to much under the mosquitoes in Greece, but in certain regions or islands they are a real plague.. being back from the island of Kythera since 1 month I still suffer 1 particular bite which still needs medical care.. bought dispensers the day after and had no further attacks.
Enjoy your holidays in wonder full Greece. |

I've been going to Greece for 20 yrs and have never had more than the odd bite - until 2 weeks ago!!!! OH & I tried 5 different repellents (sometimes all at once!!!) Not one of them worked.
Think we were just unlucky as the weather had been very wet, then went very hot, so all the little Mozzies came out at once. It is true, they don't like lemon - Citronella, but it wasn't very effective this time.
Make sure you buy a plug in thingy for night time & put some repellant on in the evenings- our Rep suggested a new one, charmingly called "Off". |

depends where you go for mossies some parts of greece seem worse than others ,they dont seem to like lemon as youve said so may be best to take peoples advice .also if you can keep your air conditioning on low when you go out of an evening and close all the doors and windows then when you come back it seems to keep them away and dont forget dont sleep with the window open and get one of those plug in insect repelents . |

Dear overthehill***
There are so many formulas , etc. but if a mosquito likes your smell then he is going to bombard you.
I used to be eaten alive by these devils before I had to drink Apple Cider Vinegar, 3 times a day. It is fantastic for de-toxifying, cleansing of the skin, toning, etc.
I take a tablespoon of A.C. Vinegar in half a glass of warm water every morning, lunch and dinner. If you drank this every morning you should be fine.

Drink lots of Turkish Coffee that works quite well.
Marmite is also said to be a good deterrent.
You can also get a slow burning scented stick that they hate but you will have to ask at your destination if they have one that works as there are many types available but not all that many that work.
Lemon works for some people but not others and if you can get it 'Skin So Soft' body oil from Avon works very well and many people in this part of the med swear by it. |

Never had any problems in Greece - the Thai ones are the man-eaters.
We are canal boaters and in the boating season have a regular "diet" of a daily garlic capsule and a Vitamin B1 tablet which seems to be effective - they don't like the garlic smell which comes through your skin.
Wash with a lemon-scented soap. Tiger balm (a hint we picked up in Thailand some 30 years ago) is very soothing. In real mozzy territory, we always carry a couple of "Clix" just in case (from Boots) plus antihistamine cream and pills. You can buy plug-in mozzy gizmos to use in your room at night, and spray your room before going to bed (under the bed) if there is no mozzy screening.
I think all mozzy countries should import geckos! |

The only repellent I can guarantee you no bites is sold by www.travellinglight.co.uk! Get the 95% DEET! DEET is the active ingredient in repellents that keep bugs from coming, in regular ones sold everywhere, there is only a bit 15% or so. See Wikipedia!
Once bitten, amoniac is the best to take the itchy feeling away! |

You need something with DEET to be effective.
I like Deep Woods Off. |

I live in Scotland and here the midge rules! We all use Avon Skin-so-Soft spray moisturiser, even the anglers! It is just the best of anything and I've tried them all. It smells nice too. It's so good, you can even buy it in the shops up here without having to find an Avon lady.
Failing that, Jungle Formula is second best but it smells awful. |

Most herbal insect repellents have failed to show any efficacy when tested. The lemon thing you're thinking of is lemon eucalyptus; which is effective. Not as effective as DEET though. |

drink gin and tonic, the tonic water contains quinneen which they hate |

I have never heard that mosquitos don't like lemon...As far as i know they hate vinegar.
What my mother used to do when i was a kid is putting a small cup filled up with vinegar about 2 meters of my bed and it worked... try it, old recipes are the best! |

A successful formula I have used to keep them away is garlic, because it comes out through the pores when you eat it and keeps the mozzies away. If you don't want to eat garlicky foods all the time then take a garlic capsule every day, these are odourless to humans but have the same deterrent effect on the mosquitos. |

Don't go for lotions or sprays...too high maintenance (or do you really wanna take it with you where eva u go???). I second the marmite thing...vinegar works too (dilute hlf a glass with water every day...not as bad as it sounds). Garlic works, but do you really want to do that to your companions??? |

Firstly, mozzies are more active during the evenings and the night so keep your doors and windows closed and avoid those lovely evening walks along the river banks! It's true mozzies don't care much for lemon so light a couple of citronella candles if you are sitting around outside and cover up! There are some good lemon scented body sprays around to deter the little chaps and good creams to help relieve the discomfort from any bites, ask your chemists both here and in Greece or check out your local supermarket shelves not forgetting lemon scented soap and shower gel, I use Apaisyl cream after being bitten it's good You can buy mozzie nets at Ikea, lightweight and cheap well worth it mozzies also dislike the scent of Geraniums that's why the locals put them in window boxes, good eh! There is a B vitamin supplement you could try which makes you less attractive to the little chaps, B 25 or 12 I'll have to come back to you on that it works well but you can achieve the same effects by eating Marmite or eating more red meat starting a couple of weeks before you go Hope you have a lovely time and don't forget your E111. Cheers |

I read somewhere that mosquitoes hate alcohol and don't bite people who've consumed alcoholic drinks. I don't know if it's true or not, though! |
