Shops and markets stock a better selection than here. Beurocracy is terrible. No Council taxes or vehicle tax or insurance. In the country it is a subsistence way of life. Dig the garden all Summer and pickle and preserve for the Winter. In the cities it is much like here. Work and struggle. They are very happy people who know how to enjoy themselves. Champagne and Caviar at the drop of a hat even for the poorest. A land of anomaly. Computers and abacus on the same desk. Rapidly adopting Western ways which is not a good thing. Traditionalist in thier love of music and dancing. Could write forever on my life in Moscow and in the south near Black Sea. They also have the same sense of humour as us Brits. Yes it is cold in Winter but very hot in Summer. I loved it. Hot water is not turned off during the summer but free communal heating is. All flats have their own gas water heaters. Mafia only bother you if you are in business. Communal maintenance is poor and streets or flats are separated into blocks which are kept clean by Babushkas (Grandmothers or older women). Strret lights are minimal but adequate. Roads are potholed. Snow clearance is efficient. Litter is scarce.Freedom of speech is now OK since democracy. Under Communism all prices were controlled and goods were stamped with price on manufacture. Now prices are down to retailer and have risen. To quote a friend of mine----" Under communists we had everything and couldn't speak but now we have little and can say what we like" Education is good and respect of elders the norm. War veterans are particularly respected and wear medals witth pride on an everyday basis. Many houses have a plaque stating that a war veteran lives here. |

I studied there and travelled through Siberia on the Trans-Sib. Loved it and miss it a greal deal. It is hard to generalize, European part is so different from Siberia, St. Pete is so different from Moscow, it all depends on where you'll be. St Pete is supposed to be the most Western city, but with the kind of money there is in Moscow, it oftentimes feels like the opposite. The people are amazing, more so in Siberia. It is a country of contradictions. Be prepared for any preconceptions you may have about Russia to be dashed once you get there, and just be open to your experiences. And do be prepared for some vodka!!! |

Day-to-day life is not much different to anywhere else in the world. People eat, drink (perhaps more vodka than some other places) and work. It is certainly cold in winter, but summer in Moscow can be VERY hot indeed.
Russia is such a large country that it is difficult to generalise, but since most people live in the big cities and in European Russia, this tends to reflect the life of the majority of people.
Differences lie in other areas such as politics and in how television and other media colours peoples' view of their own as well as other's lives. Russians are generally very proud to be Russian and as it is so big, there are very few people to contradict them. |

Lots of people think its a very cold place but actually it's only cold in the very north of russia. In the south, near Moscow, the climate is actually a lot like Canada's or Northern USA's (actually a bit warmer at times). The day to day life in Russia is quite similar to that of people in America or Canada. Instead of shopping plazas, the have 'bazaars' which are like booths open every day that sell mainly anything like clothes, jewelry, food etc. The cars are quite different. Different companies make them and I'm pretty sure that vans are quite a rare sight in Russia. There's a ton of public transportation like metros and 'Marshutkas' that are like taxis that carry people to certain places. |

Run by the Mafia so join them or you starveFood is expensive and of poor quality,Crime is unattended. by a corrupt Police authority. Most people live in commi style blocks of flats that havent been maintained for 40 yrs.The hot water in these ar turned off from April to October and street lighting in many major cities are off at 12 midnight.Women do the manual work like sweeping streets while the men drink vodka.Freedom of speech is restricted and Communism s alive and kicking. |
