definitely train....inter railing is the best option as they have travel cards for this kind of thing. travel cards are split into different regions of europe and you can 'pick and mix' the 'zones' you want to travel to and customise your travelcard for it.......amazing and cheap according to dozens of my friends

Walking ;)

Cheapest way to travel is by bus: www.eurolines.com often has many cheap deals -- just see or ask what they have on special at the time -- often they have offers like Amsterdam-Paris or London return for just 10 euro.

Trains are more expensive -- although having an open rail pass does make touring that much easier.

If you are in Eastern Europe, just buy tickets from the local stations rather than a rail pass -- the fares there are all dirt cheap.

Hostels are usually the cheapest form accomodation. Although private rooms can be cheaper in Eastern Europe (in Croatia you get mobbed with offers at the bus/train stations).
Hostel rooms usually cost 20 euro per night in a dorm, but cheaper in the East, some as little as 10. Try something like www.hostelbookers.com to get a feel for prices and options available in different European cities.

For food, its usually best to pick up stuff from the local supermarket or, even better, at open market stalls, where the town-city has one of those. Avoid restaurants/cafes in the busiest stretches of really touristy towns. They mostly charge ridiculous prices!

Also mix city tours with visits to the countryside and hiking. A day out walking in a scenic region or national park is naturally dead cheap, esp. compared with all the entrance fees to tourist attractions and cafe meals you end up forking out for when in a city.

Train when you get ones that go to other countries they speed along. Also they aren't cheap know but they get you there in speed and style.

Walking is on the slow side. I hitched-hike round Europe when I was a student and it was practically free. But I would think travelling round a few European countries by bicycle is doable and cheap if you have the time.

You can not combine best and cheap. The cheapest would be to hitch, but in some countries, like Spain, you will find it hard. Have a look at the so called hitch a ride website

www.mitfahrzentrale.de

which is truely the cheapest way of getting around.

Kevan M
Cheapest. Hitchhiking, walking, cycling.

Best way. Become a Millionaire and have someone drive you around.

pumpkin
