We only have ONE official language. What makes you think we might have a second language...especially French? We have never been a colony.

Turkeys official language is Turkish. The second widely spoken language is Kurdish and the people usually learn English - see, I am writing in English :)- at school.

official lingo is Turkish.. we aint got second lingo...

Turkey has one language: Turkish. There are some people who speak Kurdish among themselves but it's not an official language. On the other hand English is the most widely taught foreign language at schools.

ayse
Turkish which we all love

I would have to say English, not French. I think some people here are a bit insulted by this question, but it's not insulting at all. This person is trying to explain that in America, Spanish is almost like a second language because so many people learn it at school. Like Spanish being taught in a majority of American schools, English is widely taught throughout Turkey.

Hi,

Turkish People speak Turkish,
In school, we are learning English, Frech and German,

Regards

French is Canada's second official language...not Turkey's...this doesn't mean that there aren't a number of Turks who can communicate in French...they're very educated people so many can communicate in 1 or more additional languages. However, the Turkish language is the only language that has official status in the country. And just for your information, Spanish does not have official language status in the U.S. (and neither really does English for that matter - it is just a defacto language). Nonetheless, a lot of packaging and services are in Spanish to meet the needs of the large Hispanic population that calls the U.S. home.

no; we don't have any official second language. We just have one language officially, which is Turkish; and i am really proud of it.

I believe that; in USA, students take Spanish classes at school because it is their second language.
So, if there really must be a second language of Turkey (which must be unofficial, of course), then it may be English, as it is the main foreign language taught here in Turkey.

Leprechaun
There's no second language in Turkey. The only official language is Turkish. But there are a lot of French origin words in Turkish.

There are certain eras, Turkish was effected by other languages. It's effected by Arabic and Persian during empire times and French on late 19th century and early 20th century.

It's being effected by English now.

yav
wots second language?
we have only 1 pure language. TURKISH

ipek
do you think everybody has to learn spanish like in America. Thank god we are not that much stupid. Our language is Turkish.

ithinkiatetoomuch
Ipek K is right, second un-official language is Kurdish. Just like English is an un-official language of America.

You are right to think that, as many words are derived from French:
istasyon(station)
direksiyon(wheel)
klakson(horn)
garnitur(garnish)
korgeneral(corps general)
kordiplomatik(corps diplomatique),
Enfeksiyon(infection) etc
French was like English of today just before WW1, hence the influence. But it's not a formal 2nd language.

Trotsky vs Kerensky- НекIо!
Since we've never been a colony we all speak Turkish which I am very fond of. (I love my language <3 ) But if you mean what is the foreign language people learn widely, it's English.

p.s

I don't think kurdish is widely spoken at all, even the rallying PKK ,terrorist supporters speak Turkish among themselves for some mysterious reason. I am sure Circassian is more widely spoken than that although Circassians are not as many as the kurds in the East.
