daddy cool
some take it back to 1839 where te Ottoman state administration was renewed under the requests of European countries.

Turkey is a founder member of the Europen Council since its foundation in 1949

If you are talking about European Union (as Europe in your terminology) official partnership agreement was signed in Rome in 1960.

Go tell your father

DejaVu
we are not a member of EU and as a Turk hope we never will be...

regards to your dad...

Turkey is not a part of EU for the time being.

If you ask historically, Turks (The Ottoman Empire) joined those time's union in 19th century once.

If you ask geographically, Turks entered European lands in 14th century for the first time, long before the conquest of Istanbul.

HOTTürk
We didnt join the EU.

But we joined the EEC Customs Union in 1995 which is an important trade agreement for both sides. It can be called "a little bit" membership and the import&export procedures between the EU and Türkiye became easier by this agreement.

When Mustafa Kemel Ataturk established present day Turkey in 1923, he set up a Western European style of democracy, moreover, he based the new government on the principles of secularism which was an extremely revolutionary concept for a Muslim country.

In the ensuing years, he rejected fascism and communism. By 1950, Turkey joined the USA's fighting forces in Korea and became a loyal member of NATO in 1952. From that time on, Turkey's principal trading partners have been with the Western countries, not the Middle East.

Although they have attempted to become a part of the European Union, their efforts have been discouraged. Nevertheless, Turks continue to align themselves with the Western powers although there have been internal conflicts with the Kurds.

Many Turks have emigrated to Germany for employment and have established large Turkish communities, as would be expected. But they remain secular and reject Islamic governance.

That is a matter that is largely up for debate, both within Turkey and throughout the rest of Europe. At present, Turkey is not a part of the EU, nor will it be any time in the near future. While some within Turkey are trying hard to make this happen, there are many things to consider, including their economic, culture, religion, politics, history, etc. I would suggest treading lightly on this subject until you know how your house guests feel about the matter. They may want to be considered European, or they may be offended if you assume they are European.

Turkey is not a member of the EU but that doesn't change the fact we have part in Europe continent. We are more European than Cyprus which is totally in Asian continent:)))
You can tell your dad also it would be better to be more cultured at his age otherways he can not educate his children.

So DEAR QUESTION ASKER after your explanation i needed to make a little modification in my message. Just open the map and look where Turkey is. Of course please do it with your dad:)

Way before 1453. Sorry Trump, the only unconquered place was Istanbul then.

So, now, the geographical entity people call Europe is a part of the Ottoman Union. We have a king named 69.Osman. The borders of the Union stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to China and India. India has applied for membership, there are like discussions in China, too, but you know what? We, the citizens, think that our borders are already too large, that it is time to think about putting an end to enlargement. We always have a place for Native Americans and Eskimos, though.

Tell your dad that he is honored with Turkish students.

Hey, why don't YOU know these things? Have you been in a time capsule or something?

Your question is not very clear. If you are asking about EU membership, Turkey is still a candidate country. Otherwise, Turkey (and the former Ottoman Empire) has been European for a very long time, for centuries.
The Ottoman Sultan Selim III. made great changes in the government and other areas of life in order to adjust to the European way of life. Turkey's quest in that direction still goes on.
The present day's (mostly political) discussions and objections by some European leaders is just trivia. Turkey will meet all the official requirements of the EU soon. Whether the hypocritical European leaders approve this membership, or whether Turkey will still want it, is another matter to be discussed.
Tell your father to confide in these Turkish students, but not to belittle their cultural/religious beliefs.

Turkey isn't a member of the EU or European Economic Area, but there are no particular restrictions on Turks entering the UK to study.

Their claim to being part of Europe rests on their controlling a small part of the European continent which was siezed when Turkey conquered Constantinople (now Istanbul), one of the final remnants of the Byzantine Empire, in 1453.

Official Trump
In 1453 when Fatih conquered Istanbul from Byzantines....!!!!
