I have heard very good things about the "Christkindelmart" in Koln, Germany. Haven't been myself, however. |

Vienna is absolutely beautiful, with the lights and the tree and the advent calendar on the Rathaus (city hall). It has everything you mentioned. Prague is also wonderful, and not too long of a trip from Vienna if you want to do both. |

Is that all there is?

London as at first I thought you meant for business shopping since you say markets..
The rest of your Q. though indicates you want a weekend place with snow, wine etc. Let me suggest Greece and esp. the mountain places/resorts. Lots of good wine and wonderful Christmas too in the country side of Greece. Parnassus very big "market" for antiquities (Delphi is there!)snow, spa/resorts, night life! Or Aidipsos with mineral baths. OR Sounion spa/resorts by the sea and shopping and dining in Athens.
How does this sound? |

The German ones.
Lubeck, Rostock or Wismar are the best.
In Berlin there are may smaller ones all spread out - not so
good. |

Germany easily has the best, if not the most, Christmas Markets. Each large city and town has one of its own, and each with its own flair. Entire tour groups and trip packages are tailored to people who want to hop Christmas Markets in Germany, which last anywhere from 4-7 weeks in some cases. Some of the bigger German cities even have multiple Christmas Markets, spread around various market squares in the city; Koln (Cologne), for example, has about six during Christmas Market season. Some are ultra-famous, like Rudesheim on the Rhein River, or Nurnberg (Nuremberg) in northern Bavaria. Be sure to have a mug of Gluhwein (hot mulled wine) and Lebkuchen (German gingerbread). They're all worth visiting--you can even keep the Gluhwein mug. If you want snow, you're more likely to have snow each year during Christmas Market season in the south and the east, specifically eastern Bavaria in places like Amberg, Nurnberg, and Regensburg, and sometimes Munchen (Munich). Places in France, Switzerland, Austria, and the Czech Republic are also well-known for their Christmas Markets, as well as Benelux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg) to an extent; but Germany is the undisputed champion where Christmas Markets are concerned. |

I lived in Germany for about 7 years and my favorite christmas town was definately Rothenberg Germany. Its has a wonderfully romantic fill to it. The entire city is enclosed inside of Medievil castle walls with cobble stone streets and traditional arcitecture ,horse drawn carriages, Lots of museums and churches( And the bells all go off at the same times its fantasticly old world)and the food and wine is great and every chrismas they have an outside christmas market which is great. There are lots of shops as well at the famous Kathy Wolfhart store which is set up like a christmas museum where you can get all of your christmas ornaments and traditional nutcrackers and smokers, its very very nice. If you want you can walk with the night watcher as he walks the entire radius of the castle wall at night to check that all is well. This is a popular christmas destination so if you want to get a hotel inside the castle wall(which I highly recommend) you will want to book now!!! |

well ive been to the one in lille, brussels and austria and while the one in lille is the cheapest one to get to and biggest one the french are rude..i loved the brussels one as you can go to bruge which is nearby for the day and visit that..the frites (fries) and chocolate are AMAZING and the poeple spoke english and were so friendly. Austria is the prettiest place and most likely to get snow cos of the alps..if you go there try and go see the ice cave which is the biggest udnerground ice glacier in europe! |
