In my opinion, Lonely Planet and Penguin travel books are the hands down best guide books. I lived in Moscow (studying at ÐœÐ“Ð£) for four months and read tons of books before I left. I found their information most accurate.

Another great way to learn about Russia is through boards, journals, and language exchange sites. Try doing a search on Livejournal for "Russian" or "Moscow" or "Petersburg".

There are so many native Russians that are eager to polish their English! Try meeting them and learning about Russia through through them. I've met a lot of people via language exchange programs.

I point you to these places because you hear about the country through the experience of native speakers and people who have actual visited rather than through a single writer of a book or website.

Here's some information based on my personal experience: a lot of the stereotypes (excessive drinking, wild partying, racism, coldness, mink hats, a sort lawlessness) are true and exist, but you'll meet a lot of circumstances and people that prove those stereotypes wrong. It's a magical, wonderful place and I think of the four months that I spend there with nostalgia, a tinge of fear, and mostly, a with a longing to go back. I hope you will visit.
