Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey however despite to contrary thinking it is not the capitol. Capitol is Ankara. Istanbul has had this name since 1453 when the Ottomans defeated the Byzantine Empire and renamed the city from Konstantinapole. Which actually meant the city of Konstantine, who was the king of the Byzantines at the time.
For a while after Bursa, Istanbul also served as the capitol of the Ottomans. It is a beautiful city that is a melting pot. Houses many cultures still today. It is also very unique in the fact that by the bosphorus in a certain spot there are three churches with connecting walls, one Christian Church, a Muslim Mosque, and a Synagogue. This also is a standing proof for the religious freedom that the Turks have given all religions since the Ottoman Days.
Istanbul has a portion of it located in the continent of Europe and the rest of it located in the Asian continent. Through Istanbul two bridges connect the two continents. |

Look at the map of Europe and try to find the most sensitive spot. That's İstanbul in Türkiye. Half of its in Europe and the other half is in Asia. Its the most beautiful city in the world, except the traffic. |

It is in the northwestern corner of Turkey and it sits on both sides of a channel (water) between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Because it is on both sides of the water, it is officially in both Europe and Asia.
The city was founded by the late Roman Emperor Constantine in 330 AD and was originally named Constantinople. After the Turkish tribes gradually invaded from the East and eventually took over the area during the High Middle Ages, the city was renamed Istanbul.
You can find a good map of Turkey with Istanbul on it here: http://www.infoplease.com/atlas/country/turkey.html |
