Chania which is a town in the west part of the island.
Walk through Samaria gorge and stay at Aghia Marina for night life.
Don't forget to go for swimming to Preveli which is on the the south coast, at Libyan see.
Heraclion is the biggest town in the center with the more famous archeological sites of the island but I recomend to avoid Malia and Hersonisos (nearby tourist villages) because they are croweded and spoiled |

I agree with the previous answer but Stallis, which is about halfway between Hersonisoss and Malia is a lot quieter but still within easy reach of the other two towns if you want clubbing. You might also want to try going further east to Agios Nicolaios. Although I have not been there, I understand that the south coast is much quiter less spoilt than the northern coast where most of the main resorts are. |

You can go at Chania or Rethymno, the best places in Crete. It has wonderful beaches, amazing caves, historic monuments, and of course authentic Greek restaurants- tavernes, as we call them. Also nightlife is very good there! Chania and Rethymno, which are close to each other, are two amazing places in Crete- actually is the half Crete- but if you have the time visit it all.
Oh! And don't forget to visit Fragokastello, where people say, at the middle of May, soldiers, the Drosoulites, ride their horses. They say they are ghosts. I don't know if they are real ghosts, but I've seen them, and it's something no one has to miss!
Finally, wherever you go, stay away from Malia!!!
