West Virginia, you can't beat it. It's beautiful, the land is reasonably priced and not worked to death, the economy is relatively strong, schools are well funded and rate highly on national averages, little gang related trouble, good neighbors, and it's not too populated.

Ignore all that back woods hype you hear about us, it just isn't true, well, not any more than any other place, anyhow.

Come on, check us out.

Americans are flocking to places that offer big-city opportunities and amenities -- with a lot more green space and a lot less stress. See the top 10 Great American Towns. (more)
1. Fort Collins, CO 6. Overland Park, KS
2. Naperville, IL 7. Scottsdale, AZ
3. Sugar Land, TX 8. Boise, ID
4. Columbia/Ellicott City, MD 9. Fairfield, CT
5. Cary, NC 10. Eden Prairie, MN

Commerce, Texas has a university and a smaller Wal-Mart. It has good friendly people with cheap land, and I have 3 children that I have raised here and I love it. I live in a off the main road place dead in one lane road. I love the community. Everyone watches everyone elses property. One murder in our area in 50 years that has been prosecuted.

Depends on what you consider cheap land and housing, what your values are and what your definition of a good person is.

when i was looking for a change i researched different areas..
what i found was texas offers reasonable land/housing..decent schools.. the economy/ income ratio was better than most big cities or places like california & washington.. its a big state, you can find nice property near civilization for reasonable price range
you have to research economy verses average pay scale in different areas & check the schools in the interesting areas

western australia. booming economy, really cheap land and housing if you don't mind living an hours drive away from the city. low crime rate so your children are safer. massive unpopulated areas. best coastline in the world with vast expanses of deserted, clean beaches. friendliest people on the planet.

Walla Walla, Washington and surrounding area. There is vast land, it's pretty cheap, the economy is on the rise due to the many wineries that are moving into the area. It's a small town feel, there's great education available and they're west coast and easy going.

In a valley of 50,000 we have 3 colleges, one of which is an Ivy League, another ranks well into the top 500 and the third is a community college.

There are also many private school options for elementary on up through high school.
