Rome is too busy (too many long queues everywhere) and Venice too touristy and too much of a rip off.
I would say Verona - Rome on a smaller scale making it more romantic. Or somewhere completely non touristy in Italy, Bologna.
Or somewhere in the south of France like Mougins. Candelit meals in the village square, drives to the coast, sightseeing in those sleepy hilltop towns and villages, visting Monte Carlo, Nice and Cannes...... |

Sorrento, Italy
Situated on the Bay Of Naples, over looking Mount Versuvius, the famous volcano that destroyed Pompeii, Sorrento is a gorgeous harbour town that is surrounded by huge lemon groves which make the air smell delicious!
The old town centre, full of quaint little shops and cafe's offers a multitude of opportunities to spoil a loved one, and the harbour offers gorgeous sea-side walks along the blue waters of the bay, with a couple of lovely ice-cream parlours along the way to offer refreshment.
The weather is lovely most of the year and though some hotels are a little pricey, there are some more reasonably priced ones a little closer to town - the more expensive ones are further out up the hills among the lemon groves.
This is all from personal experience - not out of a brochure or website - I love Sorrento and have been there twice - once on my parent's honeymoon (strange I know, but as my grandparents paid, they couldn't stop us going!) and once with my husband as our first holiday together.
