Pompeii and Herculaneum near Naples are both stunning. Pompeii was buried by rock and ash, Herculaneum by a mudslide when Vesuvius erupted in the 1st century A.D. It's incredible to be able to wander through the streets and buildings of a two thousand year old civilisation.

My wife and I visited Sri Lanka a few years ago, and were amazed by what we saw. There are temples that have been in continuous use for 2500 years, and Sigi Riya, the palace built on a block of sandstone, hundreds of feet high. This was owned by a king who rather than being captured by enemy troops, committed suicide by beheading himself. No mean feat!

On a smaller scale, but even older is Skara Brae on Orkney. This is the remains of a five thousand year old settlement, that was used for about eight hundred years. It's one of the few places I've visited that I've had a real sense of what it must have been like to live there. While you're there, the Broch of Gurness, and Maes How are worth a visit.

I visited Hiroshima on business a few times. The Peace Museum tells the story of what happened there with great dignity. The surrounding memorial gardens are an integral part of the city that people walk through on their way to work, as well as go there to remember the victims of the bomb. I found it heartening to see how such a vibrant city can grow out of total devastation.

I was brought up in a sleepy corner of Leicestershire with a beautiful church called Elmesthorpe. The church is my favourite historical place to visit as it connects to two areas of history which fascinate me. Firstly it was bombed during the second world war ( a miss trying to get the munitions factory in nearby Coventry), the area of the chancel bombed is still in ruins and has a beautiful bench and gardens just to sit and meditate in. Secondly the foot soldiers of the army of Richard the Third stayed overnight in the church on their way to the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. They grafiited the walls and their names and emblems can still be seen.
It also holds sentimental interest to me as both my grandparents are buried under its ruined walls.
The church is still used for regular worship and it is a place of much tranquillity and thought.

Jerusalam. It is such a melting pot of religions with so much history involved. I would love to see it at least once in my life.

UK - So many to chose from - Tower of London - Hampton Court Palace - Windsor Castle - York Minster - Edinburgh Castle - Sterling Castle.

Italy - The Vatican - Venice - Colosseum - Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Number 2
Tower of London.
There's nowhere like it to get so much history and sense of drama in one place.
Simply the best and not just for tourists.

Warwick Castle. This place is amazing, and there is so much to see, and Warwick itself is worth a wander around too. Chatsworth is good too! It's just such a shame that the U.K. has so many historical places that people should go and see, but simply can't afford to because of the extortionate enrty fees. Here in Cyprus, we have many historical sights, and most of them charge just 75 cents entry fee ( around about £1.00)

I love going to Dublin, it's full of history when i stand at the GPO (General Post Office) building in O,Connell Street and see the bullet holes that are there to this day from the 1916 Easter rising i still get shuders.
