Pick up an I-amsterdam card......allows you to use all public transport and comes with a comprehensive guidebook on places to see and the card fee includes admission fees to a lot of these places......I was there for 3 days and it cost me around 54 Euros for the card.......You will get one at the tourist info counter at Schiphol airport. Do take a day trip to The Hague and Delft too.......public transport is free in Delft on Saturday! Not very helpful with the signs though...be prepared to ask around. Do go to Rembrandt house in Amsterdam and Maurishaus in The Hague for one of the most extensive collection of famous paintings.

The I-Amsterdam card is one heck of a value for money thing.

The Red Light district is a real eye opener.. and try the Anne Frank House/Museum. Really makes you think and feel gratefull for what our Grandparents did.

Sammy
if you love history check out the anne frank house its amazing

999pheebs
anne frank's house, heinneken brewery and the markets the one i liked best was on waterlooplein but look at them all if you can, deffinately rent a bike! they are the best :D They have great shops just passed the railway station towards the Heineken brewery off the main road.
Just go everywhere! lol
Oh and off the big road going to the brewery lol (love that road lol is my centre of direction) there are a couple of "coffee shops" one of them is called mellow yellow and is bright yellow lol you can't miss it you will pass it if you get on tram 24.-if that is what you are into.
pick up brochures where you are staying chances are you can also rent a bike from there lol or if you are after something different lol plenty of sex museums, tours of brothels, and red light district.
Gave fun x

the very special little cafes they have there!

the Van Gogh museum is amazing as is the Rijksmuseum... just walk the canals and take in the amazing neighborhood feel to the city. The red light district is neat but overrated. Rent a bicycle for a day and get lost (which is easy)... the pedalboats are a great way to check out the city as well.

car_man_phil
if you love girls check out the red light district!

It depends on how long you will be there and what kinds of things you like. The hotels have "help" desks in the main lobbies that have brocures of the sites in the area. If you are going to be there more than 2 days I recomend also taking a one day bus tour out into the countryside to see some windmills or some of the smaller towns. There is a complete different "feel" to the area when you get outside of Amsterdam.

It depends on what you want to do though. All about suggestions are great ideas. Rent a bike, take the tram or a taxi. Browse the net for ideas, musea, innnercity life, red lights, markets...

I went there in the summer of 2006. But if you go in the spring, you can always go see beautiful tulips!

Other than that, there are many places inclusing the Anne Frank museum( which wasn't that great. I thought it could have been better.) There is the Van Gogh museum, where you can see all his paintings and creations. You can also go see windmills which are located about 10 minutes away from the Centraal Station.
There is also a wax museum where you can enjoy waxes from Michael jackson to Paris hilton. There are also many cafe's and great places to eat. Plenty of sex museums everywhere. But try not to go far away from the central area of the main station of amsterdam, because it can be dangerous. Full of brothels.
also, SO MANY people smoke there. The roads are pretty dirty with cigarettes thrown everywhere (this annoyed me)
Buy a Travel Guide book from Barnes and Noble or something, and that should help you too.
Lastly, all I have to say is, Marijuana is Legal there.

Hope i Helped!
