Barcelona. Fantastic city which grooves 24/7. Good food, great sights, interesting history, cheap to get to and (in October) stay in (out of season). Weather in October mild - good time to be there.

I would suggest Saga Hotel on Poros. Its only an hour by flying dolphin from Athens. Has plenty shops, night life, good places to eat. Real relaxing, friendly place to stay with outside lounge area and bar at the hotel, owners make you feel like friends rather than guests but help you with taxis and any thing else you would want. You can rent motorbikes to ride around, have beaches close by.....great time there several times.
You can also take small boats to other islands for day trips. We went to Hydra then took a water taxi type boat to a beach to spend the day and then they came back and picked everyone up. Takis & Zefi owners helped with all time tables.

definte for a city break you have to choose some countrysides or go abroad--italy, france. Oct. might be abit cold, better choose some hot place.

I'd highly recommend Cascais, Portugal.

Today there is a large yacht harbour and several small sand beaches in and around town. Cascais is easily reached from Lisbon by car, (A5 Lisboa-Cascais highway), or by frequent inexpensive commuter trains. It has the ruins of a castle, an art and sea museum as well as parks and the charming cobbled streets of the historic centre. The town has many hotels and tourist apartments as well as many good restaurants of varying cost. It is a fine base to use for those visiting Lisbon and its environs who prefer to stay outside of the city yet in an equally urban and sophisticated environment.

Cascais is surrounded by popular beaches such as Guincho Beach to the west, and the lush Sintra mountains to the north. Some of its shoreline is cliffy, attracting tourists for its seascapes and other natural sights such as Boca do Inferno. It is also becoming a popular golf destination, with over 10 golf courses nearby. Surfing, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are also popular in the region around Cascais due to favourable weather, wind and sea conditions.

The Lake District in the UK! It's absolutely gorgeous.

Here's a nice place for a virtual tour: http://www.virtual-lakes.co.uk/

This is a place that helps with accommodations and activities to do there (if you are so inclined to do anything at all!):

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the loveliest of vacations. :)
