Where to stay in the Algarve?

Can anyone recommend a resort to stay in in the Algarve. Going for a quick sunshine holiday with my mam for a week in September. Have never been before and have no idea where to stay. Looking for self-catering apartment, very near beach, good selection and shops and quality restaurants, nice resort with amenities if the weather isn't good. Any ideas?

Sounds like you want to stay where we stayed. It’s one of the best known by the locals: Praia da Rocha. The beach is awesome and the apartment has a fantastic view.

Very convenient (2mins from the beach); different restaurants; a bonus is next door Portimão which has a pretty riverside with good amenities for shopping, concerts, cinema, etc.
They’ll help you with suggestions for places to see and visit.

Note: we were there in the first week of September and it was lovely and hot.

I’ll be very very surprised if you do not have a great holiday!

i would say vilamoura. it has good, very nearby beaches. there is also the marina in the center of the city, with many shops and restaraunts around it. there are many wonderful resorts in vilamoura. check out a few of these:

hotel dom pedro marina
hotel dom pedro golf
the lake resort

enjoy your stay in the algarve!!

I live in albufeira its superb if you stay at santa eulalia apts its very local the bars next door are great at only 8 euros for three course dinner and 1 euro a pint, english breakfast 2.50
the beaches are 5 mins walk from there and you wont pay a lot for the Apts, if you want more info mail me on bobalgarve@mail.com.

I stayed in a place not far from Faro airport called Orba, which wasnt too far away from Alicante and Albufera (great tourist places). Its a beautiful place. I also went to Barcelona for a day while I was there.

(:
