It completely depends on what you are looking for, but I have been to the following and really enjoyed them:
Amsterdam - great fun, lots to do, chill out in the evening on a boat cruise for two on the canals.
Rome - just an amazing city, visit The Forum, walk and admire the history and the buildings, visit the Vatican and go to Circus Maximus to avoid all the crowds.
Madrid - great shopping, it is like a cleaner, brighter London. The food is amazing and the people are great, vibrant nightlife.
Oslo - gorgeous place, wonderful views from the harbour around all the fjords, great to go on a boat tour around, looking at all the summer houses. Food is amazing, but it is not cheap.
Reykjavik - one of the most stunning places I have been. The scenery is out of this world, visiting a glacier is truly one of the biggest things I have done. Food is fantastic but it is very expensive to eat out. (However you can get a deal on Expedia for flights and hotel for about £400 for two).
Riga - great city, beautiful buildings, very very cheap, wonderful atmosphere, lovely in winter when it snows. Very romantic.
Vienna - one of my personal favs. Very very romantic city, lots to do, amazing food, stunning buildings, good fun to go up to the wineries and beer houses. We sat and watched an opera on an open air screen with a little market around us selling beer and paella - it was quite late and the atmosphere was brilliant, no problems at all. I don't even like operas but it set the scene for one of my most romantic evenings.
There are so many other places too, you can't go wrong wherever you go. |

Odessa, Ukraine (a resort city on the Black Sea)
Why? You need a passport, of course, but NO visa (if you are an American). Many people there speak English; and they are incredibly friendly - especially if you speak a little Russian. It is a very historic and beautiful city. Many great beaches. Great restaurants, clubs, cafe's, etc. And it is DIRT CHEAP ! ! !
If you get away from the "tourist-trap" areas, a GREAT dinner with drinks, wine, etc. for 2 people will cost about the equivalent of $12 USD - no kidding! (A pack of brand-name American cigarettes cost the equivalent of 19 U.S. cents!! A bottle of great wine: $3 USD. A GREAT chanpagne: about $4 USD. Need I go on?
ALSO: If you are a guy, Odessa has the MOST BEAUTIFUL and SEXIEST WOMEN I have ever seen!! And they are everywhere!!!
CAUTION: All money transactions are in the Ukraine currency, so exchange your money at a reputable place. If someone asks for $ USD, say "NO!" And beware of "scams", e.g., people volunteering to watch your things AFTER they have "trusted you" to leave for a few minutes and had you watch their things; taxi drivers who ask for $ USD or charge high prices - they will multiply their real price by 1000 if you let them!! Seriously!! A taxi ride from the airport to the center of the city should cost 60-70 "Greevna" maximum!! But once they know you are an American (and they know right away, believe me!), they will be asking for $100 USD - which is about 510 "Greevna" or more!! They will ALL ask for the same amount (or a bit less), but don't budge!! You can always call a taxi company from wherever you are and get the price set in advance!
It is now MY FAVORITE PLACE in the world!! And it just keeps getting better. |

Everyone has suggested really great cities. I particularly agree with Barcelona, Amsterdam, Berlin, Florence, Prague, etc etc......
.....BUT - what about Istanbul? Exotic, beautiful, historic. Great for culture, food, shopping, sightseeing.
Only a short flight away.
If you haven't been there you should try it; if you have, you wouldn't be asking the question!. |

Avoid the more expensive countries and get around eastern europe while its cheap.
Maybe fly to Sofia in Bulgaria(few days on the coast)...then train up to Bucharest(Romania) for one night....then train up to Brasov(lovely medieval town in translyvania-central Romania...see the castles etc)...then 5 pm bus over to Chisnau-Moldova...arrive midnight...........then on to the Ukraine...theres a boat that goes from Kiev down a long river to Odessa.
Cheap........lovely food-lovely beer-lovely people-lovely scenery-lovely jubbly
Book ya hostels on Hostel bookers or Hostel world.
Look on cheap flight websites....try Wizz airlines.
Pity it can,t be done in a weekend though.............for a weekend you could get a cheap flight(ryan air) to Katowice in Poland...and then train over to Krakow or a weekend in Gdansk in the north of Poland.
Or catch a flight to Split in Croatia...then cheap boat over to Hvar island for one day/night.
Belgrade in Serbia is also worth a look....very cheap. |

Faro, Portugal, but only for 1 weekend of the year (In July) as that's when the Moto Club De Faro has it's annual Motorcycle rally. A couple of hundred thousand Bikers and Bikes decend on the town and it's 24-7 party time. Forget Daytona in the States, it's a pale imitation
(The rest of the time, Faro has a great beach (Praha de Faro) but it's a bit dull for nightlife!)
If you can't wait that long, Prague has gone a bit Blackpool-ee but there's still a lots of beauty and history... even better in the Winter with proper snow. |

Amsterdam is lovely, but I especially liked a weekend that I had in Brussels, Belgium. It had excitement, nice people, lots of good food, active young people. Maybe it was just what I needed at that time, but it left pleasant memories. We used kras.nl for our travel. If you ever go to Holland for a visit, check this website out for cheap travel plans. The trips leave from the Netherlands, but worth the visit to Holland and then further into Europe for a day or two on a tour bus with Kras.nl. Have fun. |
