Which 8 cites in Europe would you (have you gone) go to?

My two friends and I are going to go on a backpacking trip through Europe this summer. We plan on using the Eurail to get around and it will be about a month of traveling. We are trying to cut the list down to 8 cities (or towns). Which ones would you go to and why?
We are just getting out of High School (so 17 and 18) but all three of us look older, so age restrictions aren't a huge problem.
Also, I am originally from England so we have decided to not go to the UK or Ireland.
The countries that are included on the Eural pass that we are considering are as follows:
* Austria
* Belgium
* Croatia
* Denmark
* Finland
* France
* Germany
* Greece
* Hungary
* Ireland
* Italy
* Luxembourg
* Norway
* Portugal
* Romania
* Slovenia
* Spain
* Sweden
* Switzerland
* The Netherlands

I've been to a lot more than 8 cities and would gladly go back to any of them again. In no particular order, some of the places I visit most often are: Amsterdam, Prague, Paris, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Copenhagen, and Florence.

Let's see. There's 8 cities on the old "Grand Tour". ]]I think they were

London
Paris
Rome
Vienna
Athens
Venice
and
Florence.

I think.

I would start with that, and adjust.

You can't miss Spain, so pick one:
Madrid for the capital, and all the bustle and culture that goes with it,
Barcelona, for the cosmopolitan atmosphere, or
Sevilla, for the Romance and culture
(okay, I lived in Spain, so I see it as the most important, but since you only really want to do about 8 cities, then pick one - you should probably squeeze in a day or two in Granada, as well, if you can.)

You don't want UK, so skip London, and do, maybe, Geneva or Lausanne in Switzerland. (I liked Lausanne better)

Gotta Do most of the others.

If you can manage a little extra time, or to cut a day here and there, you should try to squeeze in Munich, Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen.

For Eastern Europe, you could do Vlad's Castle (only thing in Romania truly interesting), the Dalmatian coast (I think that's in Croatia), Prague was totally in vogue, but I hear it's falling out of style, lately, and I have a good friend who LOOOOOOVED Krakow.

Whatever you do, if you can squeeze in a visit to one of the concentration camps, it's a sobering, but extremely memorable experience...life/attitude changing. I didn't want to mess with the fun I was having, but when it was presented to me, I decided it was sort of a duty...most memorable thing I did...I spent a full year in Europe, and that was the one thing that affected me as much as it did!

Hey, in the body of your question you DO mention Ireland...great place to go OFF the beaten track. Cork is neat, and I thought Kilkenny was REALLY nice! Galway looks really wild! So, if you're putting that back in, consider those.

Amsterdam, Paris, Stuttgart, Lisbon, Athens, Dublin, Berlin, and Milan. All are very fun and you can see some really cool stuff as well as experience things that you cannot experience elsewhere.

It will be impossible to include all countries/cities unless you plan to spend all your time in trains, so I`d suggest three options based on geography.
- Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg, Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo
- Nice, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, Venice, Geneva, Zurich
- Munich, Vienna, Ljubljana, Dubrovnik, Athens, Buchurest, Prague, Berlin
