Kythnos, Tilos, Agathonissi, Lipsy or Arki - it will be very quiet there! Skiathos is fun too, especially when the ferry arrives!

If you want super quiet islands (you will need your own private boat though, try Levathia or Kira Panagia (my favorite)!

Ydra, has no cars at all.
Kythnos, low population great beaches.
Naxos, another quiet island.
Patmos VERY small island.

Why an island? Check out northern Greece instead!

I think you will enjoy Siphnos and Milos very much. Siphnos has very nice picturesque villages and great food. Milos has amazing beaches, and it's very nice too. They are close by and can be easily combined. They are not very crowded, but not isolated either. Also, choose to stay in the Chora (main town, uphill) on both islands, not at the port. The port is not so picturesque.

The second largest island Evia (Euboea) was surprisingly untouristy, especially being so close to the Mainland. We stayed just outside of Amarynthos.
Loved Ios, the far side of the island from the port wasn't developed at all a few years ago.
Downside of Santorini is that the sand is black volcanic and it gets everywhere!
There was a book published a few years ago called "Greek Island Hopping" which is well worth reading.

Sissi is wonderfull!
Its a small fishing village and has a gorgeous harbour.

Kalymnos, its just what you are looking for.

Paxos was the first island we visited and is still my favourite. Few hotels but rooms can be rented. Skiathos is touristy; the nearby island of Skopelos is much quieter.

Try Kythira; small Island just South of the Peloponisso.
To be reached by ferry from Crete & Peloponisso ports, or by plane from Athens.
Just what you are looking for.
Wish you Happy 2009 with holidays on this small beautiful Island.

Thassos. Skiathos used to be nice, now it's totally touristy.
This is a great site for ideas:

go to Santorini, its beautiful, and most parts of it are not at all tourist laden. The walk up to the top from the shore is a must, but be warned its not for the faint hearted, long way, many steps but once there the views are more than spectacular.

Exiled in the Midlands
Go to the Sporades, maybe Skiathos. The toilets smell, the beds are full of fleas, and there is nothin on tele but old editions of the Benny Hill show. Ideal
