Which countries in Europe are least hostile to Americans?

I am planning to go to Europe for a couple weeks a short while after I get out of the Army. I'm a pretty aloof person most of the time, and I speak English and conversational Spanish. Based on that, where is the best place to go?

No European cities are hostile to Americans. However, you need to accept their traditions and way of life. I did a coach tour through Europe and some of the Americans on board were unbelievable. They were annoyed they couldn't use the US currency in some of the countries....I mean, why should they be able to, you are not in America!!! Always, try and speak a little of the language of the country you are in - even if it is just please and thank you. They will appreciate your effort. And try not to be loud or say things like "In America we have a bigger bridge, building or whatever". Go wherever you desire and I am sure you will have an amazing time.

Most of them are ,however it would be prudent to contact a reputable travel agent. Cultural attitudes change daily, toward us as the headlines come up with more reasons to bash the U.S.!

Countries aren't hostile to Americans: individuals are.

There are a lot of negative comments on this site about the French, and quite a few recommendations for England in this post - to give you another perspective, check this out:

It's your trip: go where you want to go. If you behave like a civilised human being I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

Italy, especially the north by Venice or Vincenza, you can pretty much get by speaking English because there are several US army and air force bases up there and the locals are used to it. There is a lot to do in Italy, Venice has the canals, you can also go down to Rome and see the coliseum or go to Vatican City and see what I think is the largest collection of art and history in the world and things like the Sistine chapel and the catacombs. You may want to get an Italian phrase book, they are like $4 and they sell ones at Walden Books or similar that you can actually use, they already have common sentences like "Where is the police station" and "Can I buy you a drink" already translated instead of having to piece it together from the words like other books make you.

Germany, Switzerland, Austria. Those three countries have package trips usually offered together and are eager for American tourists. Hungary has developed into a leading democratic country. Romania is very poor and desperately seeks tourist money.

Britain & Ireland definately, but anywhere if you have the right attitude! Most people hate loud, arrogant people and unfortunately that is the image most Europeans have of Americans, especially in pubs and bars. Tips: Don't be loud and brash in a bar, respect the locals, DON'T EXPECT them to speak English - although a large number do & will they expect (rightly) that you at least make an effort, even if the only French or German you speak is the phrase for "I'm sorry I don't speak....., do you speak English?" It'll get you a lot further! (I'm English and have travelled a lot in Europe!)
