Italy for sure

Even though Italy by population count is over 6 times that of Greece, but the corresponding numbers of English speaking people, are in favour of Greece by about the same difference ratio. Young people up to about the age of 50 are not only bilingual but most of the times with 2 or 3 more. And that is not on the account of tourist trade, as a penguin suggests, but because the multiracial communities and the ability to travel to other countries has broaden the horizons and the will of people to communicate.

It's Greece. Almost everyone from 15 to 40 speaks English in Greece, while in Italy just the educated ones do. I've lived in both countries and I know by fact.

Definitely Greece. I have lived in both and I can assure you.
In Greece people from kids to 40iers speak english. In Italy not that much.
Greeks like to swim and take some sun during the day and have coffee and drinks during the afternoon-night.

In Greece 85% of school age children are enrolled in some sort of Language School and taking up English. This statistic is true for the past 15 years that I know of. German and French are tied for second well behind English, which is the Lingua Franca today. So, if you need to communicate, choose a younger person.
The Italian statistics are nowhere close to the Greek ones.

cpinatsi
Definitely Greece. I've traveled to both a lot.

Greece I would say. The Italians that come here can't speak a bit of Greek or English. They expect everyone to speak Italian.

Say the truth!
For sure Greece.

Greece for sure. I do a lot of business with Italians and most of them do not speak more than a couple of words of English, so I have to use my very bad Italian. In Greece almost every other person you see in the street speak English.

I would say greece but it depends how old is your host. Old people in greece don't speak easily english but all the young generation does!

In summer greek like to go out, listen music and drink like every where in the world.... but in greecethey enjoy to go out at night and there is a lot of things to do!

Italy and Greece are both on the bottom of the list, about number of natives speaking English; but in Italy there are more (not such a great difference, though). Was the same even years ago when English was not mandatory at school.
Anyway, in both Italy and Greece is way more easy to find English speaking people in holyday resorts, for obvious reasons.

It is definitely Greece. In Italy, there is hardly anyone speaking English. Italians will confirm this to you as well. In Greece not everybody speaks English but the great majority does. As a rule of thumb, small countries are always more receptive to foreign languages than big ones. In Netherlands or Austria everyone speaks English. Not so in nearby Germany. And the same holds for Spain, France e.t.c.

I think Italy... but in Europe (except England and Ireland) the level of English is more o less the same... try to learn some useful words in the language of the place where finally u decide to go.
