Many European cities have a great Christmas atmosphere, and to some extent a similar one, because the decor and the commercial part are basically the same. But I'd have to say that in Germany this spirit is at its fullest and the most colourful. You may not like the commercialized bit, but it does sweep you and entails you and before you know it, you're humming a Carol and smiling at the people in some old city or town square. I love Xmas in Munich, Viktualienmarkt. Really festive, really special and always white. |

That is hard to say. I lived for 2.5 years in Italy and loved Christmas season & the markets there. Now I'm in Germany and it is basically just as amazing. Realize that European countries have been celebrating Christmas for much longer that the Americas, and most have strong Christian roots.
If you are planning a trip, try to do it in November. Most Christmas markets are going strong by then. And you can do several countries in a week or even two. There are train services between countries, so you can book to fly to (for example) Germany, stay a few days. The take the train to Austria, stay there a few days and then take a train to Italy. You can actually buy a Euro pass, which is for the rail service, so it will not cost so much.
Just look at a global map and go from north to south (this way you are going from cold to warmer climate). And be prepare to experience different weather conditions.
Good luck! |

I'd say it's Germany, because they practically invented how modern Christmas should look like. The Christmas tree, decorations, the rustic atmosphere, the noels, all come from 19th century Germany. |

I depends on what you mean with Christmas atmosphere. For me it's my home in Finnish Lapland with the peace, quiet, snow and the cold crisp air, starry sky and northern lights blazing. |
