Turkey in days of Ottoman Empire was given this name, and truly it was, while Europe was walking into improvement and separation of Politics and Religion, Turkey was led by ultra-Islamist and pan-Turkist government, Ittihad ve taragi perty (young turks).

Soldier
that's a historical term about turkey.

when that term was used turkey was occuping the balkans.

turkey is no longer in europe so is no longer the sick man of europe, but it's still a sick man ( or woman )

today the sick country of europe is albania because is exporting crime

Ken Guru
The Russian Tsar is supposed having used this term first describing the (decline of the) Ottoman Empire (Turkey).

In modern times this term is often used for a european country which is at that time facing economic problems: UK, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc had been labelled by this attribute, and more recently Russia, Portugal and France.

Ottoman Empire was given this in-respectful name during the first WW by UK who wanted to colonize it but couldn't succeed.

You are a sexist: It could as well be the sick woman of Europe....

The UK, of course.

It supports the USA blindly.

Firstly,it was Ottoman Empire.Secondly, most of them have just caught a bad cold. You can define that cold as Asian developing countries.

To all who said it is Turkey, you are racist for sure since we have one of the best growth rates in the world.

Sicks users of Y!A just fool themselves :)

I believe the answer is (or, rather, was) Germany; the country got that unflattering description due to its economy's poor performance. Now, due to its economic revival in recent years, it is more often called the engine of European economic growth or something to that effect.
