Actually it was the wife of King Menelaus, Helen the beautiful, referred to in Homer's Iliad as Orea Eleni who was abducted, but actually eloped with Paris of Troia. The insult had to be answered, so the united Greek armies took it upon themselves to do it.

The Trojan War has its roots in the marriage between Peleus and Thetis, a sea-goddess. Peleus and Thetis had not invited Eris, the goddess of discord, to their marriage and the outraged goddess stormed into the wedding banquet and threw a golden apple onto the table. The apple belonged to, Eris said, whomever was the fairest.

Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each reached for the apple. Zeus proclaimed that Paris, prince of Troy and thought to be the most beautiful man alive, would act as the judge.

Hermes went to Paris, and Paris agreed to act as the judge. Hera promised him power, Athena promised him wealth, and Aphrodite promised the most beautiful woman in the world.

Paris chose Aphrodite, and she promised him that Helen, wife of Menelaus, would be his wife. Paris then prepared to set off for Sparta to capture Helen. Twin prophets Cassandra and Helenus tried to persuade him against such action, as did his mother, Hecuba. But Paris would not listen and he set off for Sparta.

In Sparta, Menelaus, husband of Helen, treated Paris as a royal guest. However, when Menelaus left Sparta to go to a funeral, Paris abducted Helen (who perhaps went willingly) and also carried off much of Menelaus' wealth.

In Troy, Helen and Paris were married. This occured around 1200 B.C. (Wood, 16).

Legend has it that was Helen, the wife of Menelaus. The Greeks joined Menelaus in the famous Trojan siege to recover her. That's why she was named as "the face that launched a thousand ships", although it was probably only a hundred or so at most.

Personally I think it was King Priam's wife (the queen of Troy) who was probably jealous of the affect that woman who was her son's (Paris) girlfriend was having on Priam. Mrs Priam was so miffed that she sent word to the Greeks that they should come and take Helen home.

It was Helen. Eleni in Greek.
I agree with The Tank: the epic poem ''The Iliad'' by Omiros (Homer in English) is a wonderful book to read. Levels better than the wretched Hollywood film we saw.

It could be Helen or Aphrodite you choose.
because Aphrodite won the beauty contest and gave Paris a women who was already married, that women who Paris won was Helen of Sparta married to Menelaus. Paris stole her starting the Trojan war.

Helen

According to Greek mythology Troy was an ancient city in the Troad region of Anatolia and it is presented as if it were part of the ancient Greek culture states/kingdoms. Legend makes the Trojans fluent in Greek, they have Greek names, worship Greek Gods and genetically their origin is traced back to mainland Greece. The Trojan royal kinship traced its descent from the Pleiad Electra and Zeus, the parents of Dardanus. According to Greek myths, Dardanus was originally from Arcadia, Greece. His father-in-law Trojan King Teucer, grandfather of Ilus, Erichthonius, Zacynthus, and Idaea, was himself also a colonizer from Attica, Greece. Later Roman myths state Dardanus was originally from Italy, but that was mostly to give an identity and history to the Romans. The original tale traces Trojan history and genetic back to the Greek mainland and there were Greek tribes, i.e. the Molossians of Epirus, the Zacynthus tribes, that traced their origins to the Trojans. So the Romans trying to create an identity for themselves by propaganda in making the Greeks seem the bad guys in their version of Troy claimed their origins to the Trojans who were in fact according to the original versions Greeks and in essence unwillingly making the Romans GREEKS THEMSELVES, the same people the Romans were trying to make look bad!! Do think that's why they took so well to Greek culture? LOL!!
