The shortest day of the year is called the Winter Solstice or Winter Equinox. It usually occurs between December 20 and 23rd of each year in the Northern Hemisphere and in the Southern Hemisphere (for example Australia), between June 20 and 23rd.

By shortest day, we mean the duration of the sun rise till sunset. I hope this helps =)

If you are talking about how long it is light... it's the first day of winter (the day with the least sun light.)

I'm pretty sure that all days are 24 hours though. :)

The shortest day of the year is December 21 (or December 22 if it's leap year). This is the Winter Solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere it is when the Earth is titled away from the Sun as far as it is going to get.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21, 2008 at 7:04 AM EST and 12:04 AM UT (Universal Time).

In the Southern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice takes place on June 20, 2008 23:59 PM UT (Universal Time).

The winter solstice occurs at the instant when the Sun's position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance on the other side of the equatorial plane from the observer. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the event of the winter solstice occurs some time between December 20 and December 23 each year in the northern hemisphere, and between June 20 and June 23 in the southern hemisphere, during either the shortest day or the longest night of the year, which is not to be confused with the darkest day or night or the day with the earliest sunset or latest sunrise. Though the Winter Solstice lasts an instant, the term is also used to refer to the full 24-hour period.
