(I am writing in an American perspective)...Tarkan and Sertab Erener...that's pretty much it. Americans don't really know that many Turkish singers. |

Nobody. How could i?
The only reason i would know them would be if
a)i were turkish
b)i were middle eastern
3)i liked middle eastern music
To be honest i really dislike middle eastern music with the exception of some songs of an Israeli singer, Eyal Golan. |

The average American has no clue about any singers or musicians from Turkey, including myself. When I was in Romania my mother in law was astounded because I had never heard of the most eminent poet Mihai Eminescu. To allay her astonishment, I asked her, "well mama, can you tell me who was the greatest singer of all time from Japan? Well, she couldn't answer of course. The point is that every country lives in a bubble of their own. If you look to countries that speak a similar language as your own then you may have a chance that they will know what you are talking about, just as I may know some British artists. I say 'some', but what I know is probably about 1% of what the average Brit knows. Someone may be a fantastic, wonderful artist in your own country but wholly unknown any where else. I hate to sound like an arrogant American, but I think my country and England are exceptions to this. I think everyone has heard of Micheal Jackson, Madonna, The Beatles, Elvis, and the Stones... even in Japan (or maybe, especially so). |
