I don't buy the story about the old ladies and the stupid farmers. Sure these things happen, and they did happen, and they also happened every year. Sometimes they got out of control and burned a bit more than their back yard, but this disaster has never happened before. Ok, suppose the big fire started by the old lady. Whenever they try to control it, even in the middle of the night, 2 or 3 new sources of fire appear. They also found mechanisms with remote control ignition. I doubt the 65 year old farmer could make that. Plus, the farmers sometimes burn a small field to have better place for the animals to eat next year, but the animals burned too this time. They are not that stupid to keep putting fires while their homes are on fire.
So it's someone else. Too organised to be Greek, actually. I wish I knew who it is, I would become a killer honestly, although I am a peaceful person.

We have met the enemy and the enemy is us;

One of the individuals is a 65-year-old man, who witnesses said they saw torching areas in the southern Peloponnese region near the town of Areopolis, located 190 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of Athens.

The second person was a 77-year-old woman who reportedly started a fire while cooking in her garden in Zaharo, one of the hardest hit areas in the south.

Authorities are deeming her behavior criminal neglect.

Meanwhile, officials are also investigating a gas canister explosive device found attached to a cell phone on the outskirts of Athens.

My heart weeps at the sight of Greece burning. May God help you.

It is no time for us to express our suspicions.

It is time for THEM, the Authorities, to investigate NOW, find out, arrest people and put then into jail for life.

slaveof12gods
no matter how you look at it ,it's a flipping mess - terrorists I call them! you all can disagree with me but I think terrorism is my choice of wording!

I don't want to say...deep down inside we all know who did it and partly it's our fault too...

violin 4 life
some psychopathic sick-os!!!!

Leonarda
Who started it is not the point...The result is the same...Who morally has supported this we know...Those who dominate this country, and this, because of the lack of coordination, ansd of their fights on the grave of the nature, and the human life...

I have my suspicions but I don't think it is time to point fingers,it is time to organise and to put this damn fire out NOW!!!! My heart bleeds for all of you and you are all in my prayers.PRAY FOR RAIN!!!!!

yiotadelta
I do not suspect, I know. She was arrested, as we all read. The 77 years' old lady baking kolliva in her yard. A fact which proves the total incompetence of all parties involved in prevention and extinction of fires, as well as running this state in general. And to set the record straight, not all 65 people died in the Peloponese, some died in Evia and we should not forget the people who died in the massive fires during the previous couple of months, many of which were firemen on the line of duty.
We do not need prayers, we need to be more competent, efficient, organised, focused and attentive- and less ignorant, superficial and corrupted.

Airpole
The complete incompetence of those that should have been the right people in the the right job.
The two chiefs of civil protection and fire department should go yesterday home together with their political boss.
The three of them are useless and the two of them full of empty talk.
It's not only an national tragic disaster. Is an international crime against humanity. The gem of ancient Greece is in black and they feel secure in their posts!!
Shame. Aidos Argoioi!!

the number of fires seems to suggest that there were several culprits. Some were undoubtedly the usual suspects - the land development corporations who want to build new projects near Athens, and villagers who want to create grazing land for their sheep. Others are the usual idiots: technicians welding in the open without taking the necessary precautions, farmers who wanted to clear their fields, 77-year old grandmothers cooking next to dry kindling, careless campers etc. Then there are the rubbish tips, which are ignited in high temperatures: blame your local town councils for those. The list is endless.

The government would have us believe that it was terrorists or foreign agents behind it all. They may have information that is not available to us, but I would rather not attribute to foreign malice what can be easily explained by Greek stupidity.

I will pray, its a special praying night tonight in Türkiye (and assuming in all muslim countries) our prayers will be with Greece...

Takis
Some were started by accident. Others were started by natural causes, keep in mind the extremely hot winter and the summer that followed! A few may have started by arsonists!

Personally I dont know a specific group of people that would like to harm tha country of Greece !!!

Instead of praying, I'd rather go after the goons who start all these fires. They make me so mad. How can they actually enjoy the torture of innocent human beings?

Those bloody arsonists!!! Like they always have in the past but this time they've gone too far!!!
I pray that things get better there! I hope they find the people responsible and set THEM on fire!! They deserve it!!!!!!!!!

kykkox24
Its an organised crime!!

Jail for life to the real guilty (Certainly not the old lady cooking outside & the farmers who all lived there their entire lives = they know how to protect & use their environment)

Guilty are all the money lovers who live in palaces, consuming everything without giving something back & further more have only destruction for profit in their minds

When will human beings realise that uncontrollable development will lead to destruction as oppose to sustainable development for everybody?

Whoever is guilty i hope they find them & jail them for life

In the meantime DONT GO TO VOTE IN 2 WEEKS TIME

For decades incompetent Politicians & their people in key positions diminished the state's capabilities, which resulted to an almost blackout at the most crucial emergency post-war Greece had to face...

Its unacceptable to invest in arms & steal public money & not have for example at least 2 fire engines in every village at this high-risk summer period & more & new Canadier & helicopters and generally the latest technology available!!! After decades of frequent summer forest fires the system should have been in place & ready to avoid nowadays total destruction!!!

SO RESPONSIBLE ARE ALL OF US who watched with apathy every summer during the last 2-3 decades our forests burning & our incapable state unable to react - our authorities unable to protect our forests & nature from land developers - & ourselves too pre-occupied to act!!

Certain people in the building industry want the land cleared so they can build more houses.
