I really think that both are friendly to Americans. I am sure in Greece,at least, you won't have any kind of problems. Choosing Greece for your studies (did I understood right?) would have in mind that:
a. Almost everyone in Greece younger that 50 or 45 speaks english in a good level. You won't have any communication problems, especially in the big cities, such as Athens and Thessaloniki.
b. Greek culture is more affected by USA, there are many series and US films on TV that are only subtitled (so you watch and hear a US movie withour doubling), you will feel more familiar.
c. Greek language is difficult and the spelling is very difficult for someone who wants to study in the University and not just go to school (there are 5 different types of -i in writting).
Italy in the other hand is:
a. more expensive for a tourist or a student.
b. you maybe have communication difficulties if you don't speak italian.
c. is a big country and more developed in some "fields".
d. italian is a really very easy to learn language, in a year you could learn to speak perfectly and start your studies.
Of course, there are language schools in Greece for foreign people who want to study in Greece, but a year is not enough to speak and write fluently.
For a short term study, I would say that Greece is a better choise. It is also a very safe country.
I hope it was helpful... |

Neither Greeks or Italians are in general hostike to the U.S citizens (provided of course that the latter are well- behaving people) |

I found both hostile people and friendly people in both countries.
Which language do you speak? If you want to learn Italian, then study in Italy. Otherwise, study in Greece. |

Greeks and Italians are both very friendly people. You will be welcomed by both, I can assure you. "Hostility" to Americans only has to do with american foreign policy and Bush, not individuals. People from the US are recipients of warm hospitality in both countries. You may find that in Greece more people speak English though. |

I have been to both countries many times and have found the ordinary folk to be very friendly, although I am not American, I don't think you would have many problems in either country. Personally I would reccommend Italy for it's sheer beauty and slightly cooler climate, although it's still quite hot in summer.
If you don't speak the lingo, be prepared for some confusing times as neither of these natives speak much English.
Bring a good tourist handbook!
Have a lovely stay. |

Neither people are hostile. In fact, both are very friendly and I would say young Italians are a bit more "friendly" thinking themselves the irresistible Latin lovers. The main issue that is in favor of Greece, is the large percentage of people speaking fluently English in comparison to Italians. That fact will make your life much easier in everyday partake.
As it was pointed out you are the starting point of the attitude of people towards you. If you are tact-full, people will respect your privacy and will be very help-full in all your needs regardless of your origin. Learning a few phrases of the local language will be wall breaker in your favor. |

i would go for Greece..
I think that Greece has more food and belongs than Italy.
Greek (at least Athenian) women were not citizens; Roman women were. Both societies were also divided according to wealth.
Dealing with Athens, according to the literature, women were valued for not gossiping, for managing the household, and, most of all, for producing legitimate children. The aristocratic woman was secluded in the women's quarter and had to be accompanied in public places. She could own, but not sell property. The Athenian woman was subject to her father, and even after marriage, he could ask for her return. She was not a citizen.
The Roman woman was subject to the paterfamilias, whether the dominant male in her household of birth or the household of her husband. She could own and dispose of property and go about as she wished. From epigraphy, we read that a Roman woman was valued for piety, modesty, maintenance of harmony, and being a one-man woman. She could be a Roman citizen.
