Oedipus was a king of Thebes who unknowingly killed his father, and also ended up marrying his mother. He didn't know she was his mom at the time.
An oracle had foretold his fate, but as he tried to escape it, he ended up fulfillilng it.
The story has generated countless discussions of fate vs. free will. |

"Oedipus tyrant", was a THEATRICAL PLAY, written by Sophocles and presented in front of an audience for the first time in 428 BC.
It tells the story of a man who after he received an omen from the priestess Pythia (that he would kill his father and wed his mother, who were the king and queen of Korinthos) he decided to walk away from the family so that the omen would not be fulfilled.
He was born in Theva, son of Laios and Iokasti, the king and queen of the city. His father had received the same omen from an oracle so with bitter heart he abandonded the newborn baby (Oedipus) near by Korinthos.
A shepherd found the child, felt sorry for his misfortune and brought the infant to the beloved king and queen of Korinthos who they could not have children.
One day and as a grown up man, during a festivity, someone called Oedipus a "bast....ard". Oedipus was not aware that he was found abandonded in the hills. So he went to the oracle to ask about his origins. Instead, he received an omen stating he would kill his parents and wed his mother.
He fled from Korinthos, wandered around and one day, heading north to Theva he run across a rich man with hisservants. They quareled over passage rights and a fight started. Since he was brought up in a royal environment he was a top class warrior and he killed the king of Theva not knowing who that man was (it was his father Laios).
Heading to Theva, he solved the riddle of the Sphinx : What is that that at dawn walks on all 4, at noon walks on two and in the evening walks on 3?"
(The Sphinx was a monster with a human head on a lion;'s body. She was positioned on the only passage to Theva from south and was killing anyone who could not answer the riddle properly).
Oedipus' answer :
A human.
In the early stages of life, a human walks on all four, later when the body gains strength, walks securely on two legs and at the later stages of life a human needs support from a cane to walk
His answer startled the mythical monster (Sphinx) and he managed to kill it thus saving Theva from a ferocious enemy.
News traveled fast. Because he managed to save Theva from the monster he was nominated the King of the city and received the widow of Laios (the former king assassinated by Oedipus) as his wife.
Together they had 4 children.
7 years of famine though resulted on Oedipus asking another mythical figure, the "Mantis Tiresias" oracle for assistance.
Tiresias revealed him the truth.
Iokasti (Oedipus's wife AND mother) upon hearing the truth committed suicide (hanged her self).
Oedipus abandoned his royal title, Theva was saved from the curse that brought famine to the city and Oedipus started wandering throughout Greece in an effort to find peace of mind.
The whole play is based on a more than ancient myth.
Moral of the story is that a man, cannot escape their destiny.
Till today, scholars consider this play as the greatest tragedy of all times. |

An oracle told his father Laios that his son would kill him. So Laios askd that the baby would be killed. His motehr felt pity for teh baby, and gave it away.
When Oedipus grew up, another oracle told him he would kill his father. He loved the man who had raised him as his own child, and he thought that was his father. So he left his home, in order to avoid being with his "father" and avoid killing him. On his way, he met Laios, his real father that he didn't know, sth. happened -an argument- and he killed him. Afterwards, he married Laios's wife, Iokasti, who was his mother, but he didn't know that. When he found out he took his own eyes out because of his despair. |
