He is Mustafa Kemal or Ataturk (meaning father of the Turks). He is a highly revered man and not a second God as one has put it. He is a great man who achieved a feat not any man could accomplish which was establish the Republic of Turkey in the wake of the crumbling Ottoman Empire. He was a military officer, a rebel leader, a president and a statesman who fought the Allies who wanted to sub-divide the Turkey of today while at the same time fighting the Sultan who appeared to voice out the sentiments of the foreign powers.
Most significantly is that Ataturk when he was President wanted to keep the government Turkish government secular in a country where the majority of the population is Muslim. He abolished the Caliphate and closed down Islamic Schools, unseated Imams from their positions and made the people abandon the Islamic way of dressing. He He also changed the alphabet from Arabic to Latin.
Personally, in my opinion, the things Ataturk has strived hard to achieve is slowly being eradicated. I don't think he would welcome the changes that happened since his demise. I am sure a lot of Turkish sentiments wishes that he was still alive to oversee Turkey, |
